Tigerair has continued its rapid expansion in Australia with the opening of a new base at Brisbane Airport.
The Queensland hub becomes Tigerair’s third Australian base following Melbourne and Sydney, and the low-cost carrier will now base two Airbus A320 aircraft in Brisbane, which it will use to launch several new routes.
Initially, Tigerair will launch a brand new Brisbane-Adelaide route this week. The flights, which commence on 11 March 2014, will operate six times a week. This launch coincides with the start of a new daily Sydney-Adelaide service, which also commenced on Tuesday.
Following this on 15 April 2014, Tigerair will start operating two new routes from Brisbane, to Cairns and Darwin, both of which will operate daily.
“This is a significant milestone for our airline, which is embarking on its future Australian expansion as planned, and great news for the domestic aviation sector,” said Tigerair Australia’s CEO, Rob Sharp.
“Budget travel options at Brisbane have lagged behind other major airports. Historically, budget travel has accounted for only 19% of Brisbane’s overall airport capacity, against 33% and 26% respectively in Melbourne and Sydney. We are responding to this demand for budget travel.
“Our fares have been proven to stimulate markets and we strongly believe in the potential this new base presents,” he added.
The new Brisbane base will generate more than 130 new jobs, including flight crew, cabin crew and ground-based staff.
