Phnom Penh International Airport
The Cambodian government has announced the suspension of work on the airport railway project in Phnom Penh.
The Khmer Times reports that the project has led to a series of demonstrations by villagers, who are concerned over possible evictions.
But following a meeting with villagers on Friday, the country’s Ministry of Public Works & Transportation confirmed that the project will be suspended and not restarted until an agreement is reached.
“We will have [another] meeting to resolve this issue,” the minister was quoted telling locals. “For the construction, we have already asked the company to halt it so that we can find a solution that suits the ministry, the builders and the villagers.”
Last month, Cambodia’s Transport Minister, Sun Chanthol, said that the airport rail link would open to the public in April 2018, and that no evictions would be necessary during its construction.
