Multigenerational trips are a growing trend in the US where vacations in fact help to bring different generations of the family for some quality time together. Parents, children, grandparents, great grandparents, including toddlers getting together for a shared adventure that offers something for everyone: adventure, rejuvenation and bonding time on one trip. Grandparents, keen to bond with grandchildren also opt for โ€˜skip-generational travelโ€™, where they plan and pay for that amazing vacation with their grandchild.

Multi-day vacations within the U.S

As per the US Family Travel Survey 2025, 92% of parents are likely or very likely to travel with their children. The top three planned trips are beach vacations (62%), visiting family and friends (61%), and theme or water parks (45%). Additionally, multi-day vacations within the U.S. (73%) are the most common type of multi-generational trip being planned.

The survey found that 71% of grandparents have taken a multi-generational trip in the last three years. In the next three years, 44% are likely to take a multi-generational trip, and 45% are planning a multi-generational trip to be booked and organised together by all members. For skip-generational travel, grandparents are primarily responsible for both the planning (75%) and the payment (84%) of the trips.

Nate Siehr, co-founder of The Big Key Group and developer behind Ambar Residences Orlando states: โ€œMultigenerational travel is reshaping hospitality-backed residential models by pushing them closer to true residential living, while maintaining the reliability of a global brand. Families traveling across generations want space to live together comfortably, not just adjacent hotel rooms. In response, these models are prioritising larger floor plans, separate bedrooms, full kitchens, in-unit laundry, and flexible living areas, paired with professionally managed operations and resort-level services.

At Ambar Orlando Residences, Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy, these elements are intentionally combined within a single home base designed for longer stays and larger family groups. The residences support privacy alongside shared experiences through multi-bedroom layouts, expansive common areas, on-site dining options, wellness amenities such as a naturally lit fitness center connected to outdoor green space, and gathering-oriented features like a resort pool that functions as a social hub for all ages. This approach allows families to spend meaningful time together while still benefiting from the service consistency and operational standards of a globally recognized hospitality brand.

Looking ahead to 2026, serviced apartments are expected to continue evolving from a niche alternative into a mainstream lodging choice, particularly in leisure-driven destinations like Orlando. Growth will be driven by longer stays, repeat multigenerational travel, and demand for accommodations that feel residential but operate with hotel-level reliability. Branded serviced apartments tied to established loyalty platforms are especially well positioned, offering familiarity and flexibility for travelers while providing owners and developers a durable, demand-driven model aligned with how families are traveling today.โ€

Seven Generations Traveling Simultaneously

2025 marks a historic demographic milestone:ย for the first time ever, seven distinct generations are alive at once. With Generation Beta (born 2025-2039) arriving in January 2025, we now have the Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, Generation Z, Generation Alpha, and Generation Beta all coexisting. This unprecedented longevity creates unique opportunities for four, five, even six-generation family vacations.

Families can now personally knowโ€”and travel withโ€”great-great-grandparents and great-great-grandchildren. A 90-year-old Silent Generation traveller can vacation with their Boomer children (70s), Gen X grandchildren (50s), Millennial great-grandchildren (30s), Gen Z great-great-grandchildren (teens), Gen Alpha great-great-great-grandchildren (under 15), and newborn Beta great-great-great-great-grandchildren.

Elaborating on experiential adventures for each and every member in a multi-generational family group: parents, children, grandparents, aunts and uncles, ย Paul Kiritsy, CEO of Shore Excursions Group adds: โ€œOur highly curated portfolio includes many shore excursions in every cruise destination that are great for multi-generational families. Some popular favorites perfect for all ages include whale watching tours in Cabo San Lucas and Alaska, our Secret Food Tours where families explore the cuisine and culture with a friendly local host, and any of our historic excursions in destinations across Europe.

From there, families can choose excursions based on their interests and energy levels โ€” from scenic and cultural tours for grandparents to culinary experiences for parents and hands-on adventures for kids. To make planning simple, our website features clear activity-level ratings for every excursion, helping families choose experiences that match everyoneโ€™s abilities. We also offer private and customizable tours so families can explore together at their own pace.โ€

Sabre surveyed its global team members to discover what travel industry insiders prioritise when booking their own vacations. The results indicated that there is a significantly higher percentage of respondents in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) as well as in North America who are looking at trips with extended family.

This trend is mirrored in other industry research. For example,ย Beaches Resorts and Censuswideย found travellers are prioritizing quality time with grandparents and extended family interactions on vacation. Their survey found 69% of parents would like grandparents to join them for more vacation time.

Sabre global booking data also shows that multi-person bookings are seeing a year-on-year boost, with group bookings for seven people showing a 14% increase, and for eight or more people, the increase is close to a quarter at 23% (bookings made from January through September 2024 for travel during 2025).
