Airbus delivers first A321XLR to Air Canada

Airbus has delivered the first of 30 A321XLR aircraft to Air Canada, marking a pivotal step in the airline's fleet renewal strategy. The aircraft, leased from SMBC Aviation Capital, will enable Air Canada to enhance its operational efficiency and expand its network by bridging the gap between narrowbody and widebody operations.

The A321XLR is set to play a crucial role in Air Canada's plans to serve secondary markets with nonstop connectivity, thanks to its extended range and improved economics. The aircraft is powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines and features a two-cabin layout designed for comfort on longhaul flights. The premium cabin includes 14 Air Canada Signature Class full-flat seats, each with direct aisle access, whilst the economy cabin offers 168 seats. Passengers will enjoy the Airspace interior design, which includes the latest inflight entertainment, Bluetooth audio, full in-seat connectivity, and XL overhead bins with 60% more storage space. An advanced ambient lighting system is also included to help mitigate jetlag.

The A321XLR, part of the A320neo Family, offers an unprecedented range of up to 4,700 nautical miles and a 30% lower fuel burn per seat compared to previous generation aircraft. This range allows Air Canada to operate nonstop transatlantic flights from Montreal and Toronto to destinations such as Berlin, Toulouse, and Edinburgh. As of March 2026, Airbus has secured over 500 orders for the A321XLR.

Air Canada currently operates a fleet of 136 Airbus aircraft and has 61 more on order, including the recently ordered A350 aircraft. The A321XLR's ability to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) aligns with Airbus's goal to have its aircraft 100% SAF capable by 2030
