The China Pavilion at the 61st International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, unveiled its latest exhibition, "Dream Stream," on 8 May. Hosted by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China, with the China Academy of Art (CAA) as the curatorial institution, the exhibition is led by Professor Yu Xuhong, President of CAA. It aims to reveal Eastern cultural lineages in the digital age, aligning with the Biennale's theme, "In Minor Keys."
"Dream Stream" draws inspiration from the "Dream Stream Essays" by Shen Kuo, a Northern Song Dynasty scholar. The exhibition features a blend of calligraphy, video installations, and cutting-edge technologies, creating an immersive art scene that bridges ancient and modern, China and the world, art and science. Highlights include Game Science's "Black Myth: Wukong," debuting as a game art form, and the large-scale installation "2027 Shen Kuo" by MSG, inspired by traditional Chinese long handscrolls.
Other notable works include the spatial installation "Liangzhu Highlight," a collaboration between artists and scientists, and Xu Jiang's outdoor sculpture "Symbiosis," symbolising civilisational mutual learning. Calligrapher Wang Dongling's giant cursive script "Free and Easy Wandering" is co-written with a robot, whilst Yang Fudong's "Solitary Hill Plantain Rain" pays homage to Song Dynasty traditions.
Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini and President of La Biennale di Venezia Pietrangelo Buttafuoco praised the exhibition. Yu Xuhong expressed hope that visitors would engage deeply with Chinese culture and the dynamic interplay of art and AI
