Cardamom Tented Camp in Cambodia has unveiled an artist-in-residence programme, inviting Khmer artists to create art inspired by the surrounding 18,000 hectares of indigenous forest in Botum Sakor National Park. The initiative begins with artist Im Pesey, who will reside at the camp from 21 June to 5 July, creating works that reflect the natural environment.
Pesey's residency, titled "Melody of the Forest," will focus on capturing the atmosphere and mood of the forest through various mediums, including watercolour paintings and mixed-media sketches. "Through direct observation and immersion in the camp’s environment, I aim to develop a series of paintings and drawings that translate sensory experiences into expressive visual forms," Pesey stated.
The programme aims to foster a creative dialogue between artists, the environment, and guests. Each artist will conduct at least two workshops, open to all skill levels, allowing participants to engage in nature observation and drawing. Marsha Niemeijer, the camp’s artist residency director, emphasised the programme's goal to build a dynamic community inspired by nature.
The artist-in-residence programme aligns with The Long Run’s 4Cs framework, which integrates cultural, conservation, community, and commerce goals. Artists will receive a stipend, accommodation, and full board, and are expected to donate one artwork for permanent display at the camp.
Future residencies featuring additional Cambodian artists are set to be announced soon, continuing the camp's commitment to promoting sustainable ecotourism and conservation efforts
