AENA, the national airport authority of Spain, has reportedly moved to take control of London Luton Airport, the Sunday Times has revealed.
The company, which currently holds a 10% stake in the hub, is looking to exercise a right of first refusal over the remaining 90% held by its Spanish partner Albertis. AENA would need to stump up EUR400m for the airport, which is now the UK’s fifth busiest based on passenger number.
It is believed that any such move could be a step forward in delivering the touted expansion plan for the airport.
Albertis sold Cardiff Airport in March to the Welsh government for GBP52m.
