The event, held at iLEAD in Kolkata, showcased the museum's vision and immersive experiences, set to open on Gosaba Island in the Sundarbans.
The museum, featuring 14 thematic galleries, will highlight the biodiversity, heritage, and environmental significance of the Sundarbans, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The galleries will cover diverse themes, including local livelihoods, conservation efforts, and future challenges. Notable features include AI-powered documentary films, a VR-AR mangrove experience, and live demonstrations of traditional honey-making techniques.
The soft launch was attended by distinguished guests, including Lt. Col. Anant Sinha, Director of The Asiatic Society, and Pradip Chopra, iLEAD Chairman, who conceptualised the museum. Chopra stated, “The museum has been envisioned as more than just a tourist attraction. It aims to become an educational and cultural institution that raises awareness about the ecological importance of the Sundarbans and the urgent need for conservation and sustainable development.”
The Sundarban Museum aims to provide visitors with realistic depictions of the region's ecosystem, including projections of the Royal Bengal Tiger and other wildlife. The official inauguration is anticipated in August 2026, potentially attended by a distinguished dignitary
