Air China has joined the search for sustainable aviation fuels. The state owned airline recently became the first Chinese member of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Users Group (SAFUG). The group aims to support the commercial use of lower carbon renewable fuels and to achieve carbon-neutral growth across the industry. By joining the Group, Air China becomes a participant to biofuel research and will share in existing knowledge acquired through prior aviation biofuel flight-testing.
Environmental sustainability has become increasingly influential in Air China’s corporate strategy. The national carrier is currently working with Boeing, Petro China, UOP and other stakeholders to implement the first biofuel flight in China late this year and a transpacific biofuel flight is expected to be implemented sometime afterwards.
