Boeing finally delivered its first B747-8 Freighter to Cargolux Airlines yesterday. The brand new plane was scheduled to arrive with the Luxembourg-based cargo giant last month, but Cargolux delayed the delivery due to “contractual issues”.
These problems have been resolved however, and the new B747-8F finally arrived with Cargolux yesterday following a flight from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Cargolux is the launch customer of the B747-8F, having placed its first order for 10 freighters back in 2005. In has since ordered another three jets.
“This is a great day for The Boeing Company and for Cargolux,” said Jim Albaugh, President &d CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “The 747-8 Freighter is truly the ‘Queen of the Skies’ for the 21st Century, and will continue the promise of the 747 for decades to come.”
The 747-8F looks like the previous B747-400, but provides 16% more cargo volume than its predecessor. Boeing also claims it offers double-digit improvements in fuel burn, operating cost and lower emissions.
The passenger version of the B747-8 is due to be delivered to Lufthansa later this year.
