British Airways boss Keith Williams has dismissed thehigh-speed rail link between Heathrow and Gatwick, dubbed Heathwick,in support of aviation growth. In a statement responding to the government’s aviationconsultation, which closes for submission tomorrow, the carrier warned that the proposed ‘virtual hub’would not be enough to support growing passenger numbers.
“The Government musttake action now. There are no easy choices, but avoiding these choices is toundermine the UK aviation and aerospace industry and to hinder the economicrecovery,”said Williams. “The UK Government has a choice. It can pursuesustainable growth, or simply manage a steady decline”. The airline said it wasconvinced the UK air industry could grow while staying committed toenvironmental targets.
