Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) has warned Qantas and the Unions that it will intervene if the industrial dispute poses any threat to passenger safety. The warning was issued in a letter from Acting Director of Aviation Safety Terry Farquharson to the national carrier and worker unions. Quoted in the Australian newspaper, Farquharson wrote; “I would like to remind all parties involved of the paramount importance of aviation safety . . . I would appreciate your assurance that you share this understanding during these difficult times. CASA will continue a high level of audit and surveillance of aviation safety-related activities during industrial actions and will take any necessary actions required to maintain aviation safety.”
Meanwhile, the dispute between the airlines and workers intensifies, Qantas Chief Executive Officer, Alan Joyce, recently told Sky News that the crisis is likely to deepen further before it improves. “We don’t see this getting any better any time soon. If anything, this is getting worse,” he said.
