More than CNY400 million (US$63m) has been earmarked to develop tourism in Tibet, Xinhua has reported.
The funding, provided by southern China’s Guangdong province, is intended to develop an “international tourism town” in southeast Tibet’s Nyingchi prefecture.
According to authorities, the tourism town project will be complemented by 22 “model villages”, which are intended to help local residents provide homestays and other services.
To boost international tourism however, China will need to lift a ban on foreign tourists to Tibet. The now annual clampdown was enforced earlier this month.
