China’s National Museum reopens
The National Museum of China has reopened following an extensive, three-year renovation project.
According to China’s state news agency Xinhua, the Beijing museum has been undergoing a period of trial operations following the CNY2.5 billion (US$397 million) expansion and enhancement project, but following a grand ceremony in Thursday it has now fully reopened.
The museum now covers nearly 200,000m² and houses more than 1.2 million cultural relics and artworks. New features include 48 large exhibition halls, a theatre, conference hall and broadcasting studio, as well as souvenir ships, cinemas and restaurants.
“The renovated National Museum of China has become a new icon and major destination for visitors to the Chinese capital,” said the museum’s Curator, Lu Zhangshen.
