Comillas tops list of Spain’s most-searched small villages

The holiday rental portal Holidu has unveiled a study revealing the top 10 most-searched small villages in Spain, with Comillas in Cantabria taking the top spot. The analysis, based on monthly Google searches by Spanish residents, highlights a surprising trend: four of the top five villages are located in Spain's green, Atlantic north, a region often overlooked by British travellers.

Comillas, a small coastal town where the renowned architect Gaudí once built a summer house, leads the list with 4,660 monthly searches. Known for its sandy beaches and unique architecture, Comillas is easily accessible from Santander, which offers direct flights from London and Edinburgh.

Following closely is Santillana del Mar, also in Cantabria, with 3,490 searches. Celebrated for its well-preserved medieval charm, the village is home to cobbled streets and stone manor houses. It is conveniently located near the famous Altamira caves, renowned for their ancient paintings.

Frigiliana in Málaga, the top southern village, ranks third with 3,380 searches. This picturesque village is characterised by its whitewashed alleys and Mediterranean views, offering a quintessential Andalusian experience without the usual crowds.

The study, conducted by Holidu, tracked Google searches over a 12-month period for villages with fewer than 5,000 residents. The findings suggest a growing interest in exploring Spain's lesser-known regions, offering travellers unique cultural and historical experiences
