In May 1999, Chris, the general manager of my former ad agency client Air New Zealand called me. He wanted me to design and facilitate a 4-day program for his A&P Team. We had a blast! I enjoyed the challenge, his team went away with thousands of fresh ideas, and they achieved a 25% revenue over-achievement that financial year.
This stuff works! So that was it. The company now known as Hotheads Innovation Skills Training was born, and has continued to grow by word-of-mouth referrals since.
A few years ago, I made an important decision regarding scaling Hotheads Innovation. The more profitable route would be to train up half a dozen mini-me trainers to run my programs around the region. But that would result in me becoming an administrator, bogged down in logistics. That’s NOT where my interest, passion, nor strength lies.
So instead I decided that I would personally design and deliver every single Hotheads management training and development program. Because that’s where I add most value for you.
Sure it’s less profitable, but it’s more impactful in the long term for myself and my clients because of the difference I can make with my deep-learning transformative training experiences.
I was born in Zimbabwe, and have since lived in 8 countries (including Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, China and Thailand) and travelled — for work or leisure — to a further 75.
As an advertising guy, I was a creative director for agencies such as Ogilvy & Mather, Saatchi & Saatchi, Bates, etc, before re-imagining the integrated communications agency model, co-founding own agency in Singapore, which we built up into a $20m business and exited by selling it to US-listed group DraftFCB. Against the backdrop of the 1997/8 Asia Financial Crisis, as Country Managing Director of FCB Singapore, I achieved a 44% revenue growth and 21% profit growth. Quite proud of that.
With a background in psychology (my passion is the neuroscience of creativity) and mass communications, I have 30 years of experience at the intersection of creativity and commerce, which means my workshops are a deep-learning experiential event for all to learn from someone who has actually lived and breathed this subject.
I’m something of a serial entrepreneur, having worked as a senior director to future-face a non-profit NGO, troubleshooting a digital media company as acting publisher to identify innovations in its international publications and business model, and ran my own innovation training consultants business for 20 years now.
The Daily Telegraph (UK) once described me as “the perfect storyteller” which only proves that you can’t believe everything you read! I wish there was more time for writing. I’ve published 9 non-fiction books which have sold 100,000+ copies (including 3 on best-seller lists in 3 countries), and was one of the most widely published travel writers in Asia Pacific, with features in National Geographic Travel, Travel + Leisure and major dailies.
In a very rich and rewarding career, I’ve addressed a UN conference on tourism innovation, MC’d a TEDx event on Creativity & Collaboration, and was chairman of the Chief Innovation Officer conference, Shanghai 2016, and Chairman/MC of Asia Corporate Innovation Summit, Jakarta 2017 and 2018.
I’ve also keynoted dozens and dozens (possibly hundreds) of conferences as a motivational speaker, chairman, and panelist, and judged award shows from Creative Circle Awards, to Mumbrella innovation awards to Singapore Press Holdings Splash awards.
