Earlier this year we reported that Australian billionaire Clive Palmer was to fund a construction of a 21st century replica of the original Titanic, which sank 100 years ago in mid- Atlantic.
The new ship, to be called the Titanic II, will boast 21st century state-of-the-art technology and the latest navigation systems, while being every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic, according to Palmer.
He has estimated the new ship will cost in excess of £325 million to build and has secured all finances for the vessel. A memorandum of understanding has been put in place to build the ship in China with CSC Jinling Shipyard.
Speaking of his plans for the liner, Palmer, who is thought to be worth £3.5bn said: “Titanic II will become a regular feature on the transatlantic route between the UK and USA. This magnificent vessel is being constructed in memory of the heroic people who served on the first ship, as well as the passengers who sadly share their fate”.
The ship will operate under the newly-created company Blue Star Line, an obvious play on words as the original Titanic was operated by White Star Line. Blue Star Line announced that it has secured the services of a Finnish-based Deltamarin to conduct a full review of the project. The company will ensure that the vessel is compliant with all safety and construction standards required by regulators as well as meeting the criteria set by Blue Star Line.
Whilst the Titanic II will share the same look as her predecessor, below the waterline it will be a modern, more efficient vessel. The line’s statement said more than 20,000 people have signed up on its website expressing interest in the project and future bookings.
