The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) at Delhi has become one of the costliest airports in the world with the implementation of the User Development Fee (UDF). The UDF was brought into effect yesterday (15 May) with a steep hike of 350% in airport charges. For the first time, the UDF will also be levied on the arriving passengers.
The UDF will be charged based on the distance travelled, for which slabs have been created. The International Airport Transport Association (IATA), the airlines and the tour operators have cautioned that the new tariff hike will drastically affect the day to day operations of domestic as well as international airlines.
The UDF was approved by the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) and will be valid for a period of two years.
