Set on a quiet plateau in Bayerisch Gmain, with uninterrupted views of the Berchtesgaden Alps, Klosterhof – Alpine Hideaway & Spa feels purposefully removed from the noise of modern life. This is not a hotel built around inherited history or romanticised narratives of the past. Instead, Klosterhof represents a consciously modern interpretation of Alpine wellbeing, one that has been designed from the ground up to support rest, recovery, and long-term health.

Opened in 2016 and run by Henrike and Dr. Andreas Färber, the retreat sits on former monastery grounds, yet its identity is firmly anchored in the present. Architecture, wellness programming, and daily rhythms are guided by a clear belief: meaningful recovery is not accidental, it must be intentionally created.

Architecture that invites stillness

Klosterhof’s design responds quietly to its surroundings. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Lattengebirge, drawing the landscape into every room and public space. Rather than competing with nature, the building recedes into it, allowing light, silence, and mountain air to become part of the guest experience. Paths through meadows and forest edges encourage movement without urgency. Guests are not rushed between activities or bound by rigid schedules. Instead, the hotel’s layout and pacing gently invite slowing down, reflecting a growing shift in wellness travel away from excess and toward restraint.

The Artemacur Spa: where nature meets evidence-based wellness

At the heart of Klosterhof lies the 1,500-square-metre Artemacur Spa, a space designed to balance sensory calm with therapeutic depth. Indoor and outdoor pools, panoramic saunas, and quiet relaxation areas open toward the mountains, reinforcing a sense of openness rather than enclosure. Signature treatments draw on regional elements, most notably Bad Reichenhall salt. The Alpine Salt Dome allows guests to float weightlessly in warm saltwater, supporting joints, skin, and respiratory health, while the quartz sand bed offers deep warmth and muscular release. These experiences are not framed as indulgences, but as functional tools for regeneration.

Medical backbone of Klosterhof philosophy

What distinguishes Klosterhof from many Alpine wellness retreats is the clarity of its medical thinking, something that becomes evident when spending time on the property. In a candid conversation during my stay, Dr. Andreas Färber spoke openly about why wellness at Klosterhof needed to move beyond spa indulgence and into something more structured, preventative, and sustainable. As a physician and co-owner, Färber has been instrumental in shaping the hotel’s holistic wellbeing philosophy, ensuring that every element, from movement programmes to nutrition and mental recovery, is grounded in real health outcomes rather than passing trends. His view is simple but firm: modern travellers are not just tired, they are depleted, and recovery requires intention, not excess.

That thinking underpins the Artemacur Health Center, where medical insight is woven into the guest experience through sports and nutrition counselling, mental coaching, and preventative health approaches. Rather than positioning wellness as a temporary escape, Klosterhof frames it as a recalibration, one that guests can carry back into daily life. Spending time on the property makes it clear that this philosophy is not theoretical. It is reflected in how programmes are designed, how the spa is used, and how nature is treated not as scenery, but as a therapeutic partner.

Sustainability as structure, not storytelling

Klosterhof’s approach to sustainability is equally intentional. In 2022, the hotel became the first in Germany to receive the EU Ecolabel, the official environmental certification of the European Union. This recognition reflects operational choices that prioritise energy efficiency, responsible resource use, and long-term environmental accountability. Rather than positioning sustainability as a marketing narrative, Klosterhof treats it as a baseline responsibility, embedded across daily operations and guest experiences. The result is a form of luxury that feels lighter, quieter, and more aligned with its setting.

Culinary philosophy guided by balance

Food at Klosterhof follows the same principle of conscious choice. Under the motto “your mood defines your food,” guests can choose between three culinary paths: a creative, globally inspired menu, a vitality-focused Alpine offering rooted in regional flavours, and a fully plant-based vegan menu that avoids industrial substitutes. Menus are designed to nourish rather than overwhelm, supporting the hotel’s wider focus on wellbeing without sacrificing creativity or pleasure. The weekly “Secret Forest” fine-dining experience adds a more intimate layer, offering a small-scale culinary journey that prioritises craft, seasonality, and connection.

Klosterhof does not present itself as a place shaped by centuries of tradition. Instead, it reflects how wellness travel itself is evolving, particularly in Germany and Central Europe. Here, calm is not inherited, it is designed. Healing is not symbolic, it is practical. Sustainability is not aspirational, it is operational. By combining Alpine nature, medical expertise, and environmentally responsible design, Klosterhof positions itself as a contemporary sanctuary for travellers seeking depth, clarity, and genuine restoration.

In a world that increasingly rewards speed and stimulation, Klosterhof offers something rarer: a carefully built space where slowing down feels both natural and necessary.
