A piece of engine cover has fallen off an easyJet flight from Milan seconds after the plane took off.
The cover, which broke loose while the A320 was pulling off the runway, had to be cleared from before the plane was allowed to land – leaving it to circle for 20 minutes.
Crew onboard gave passengers a safety briefing while the procedure took place, the Evening Standard reported yesterday.
During landing the engines were put into reverse to brake, which caused another part of the cover to fall away.
The paper quoted passenger Filippo Guazzini who wrote on his Facebook wall: “It fell away right in front of my eyes and I started screaming, ‘A piece of the wing has gone flying’.
“We were circling for 20 minutes before we landed again and the crew were trying to keep everybody calm but it was an experience I don’t want to go through again.”
Two flights were forced to divert because of the incident.
EasyJet said it was investigating the issue and released the following statement:
In a statement, easyJet said: “EasyJet can confirm that flight EZY2715 from Milan Malpensa Airport to Lisbon on August 12 returning from airbourne shortly after take off due to a technical issue with one of the engines.
“The aircraft landed routinely and safely using both engines. All passengers disembarked and easyJet provided an alternative aircraft so they were able to continue their journey to Lisbon later that evening.
“The safety of its passengers and crew is easyJet’s highest priority. We would like to apologise to passengers for any inconvenience experienced due to the delay.”
