British Airways has deployed a larger aircraft on flights to Kiev following a surge of bookings since England’s win on Tuesday.
The move will mean more seats are available for fans, while air charter companies have seen a jump in searches for flights to Ukraine’s airports following the win and subsequent qualify into the quarter finals. PrivateFly CEO Adam Twidell tweeted it had seen increased interest in flights to Ukraine, while Air Charter Services said it had seen “exceptionally high demand” since Tuesday.
“The match venues and dates during the group stages were set in stone for the teams, no matter what the result – now that we are approaching the latter stages of the tournament, we are experiencing exceptionally high demand again, but with much shorter lead times than before. Having said this it comes as no surprise and we had already been pricing up all possible options in anticipation of these enquiries,” said Matt Purton, director at ACS.
Meanwhile, Ukraine is seeing a huge rise in tourism arrivals on EURO 2012 match days, the country’s Ministry of Infrastructure has revealed.
This June the daily number of people arriving in Ukraine grew by 90,000 compared to the same period of 2011, and on 11 June – the match day between Ukraine and Sweden – in excess of 100,000 fans visited the ‘fan zone’ Kiev’s Independence Square. Four Ukrainian cities are hosting matches during EURO 2012 – Kiev, Kharkiv, Donetsk and Lviv.
