Hokusai and the Samurai World at the Sumida Hokusai Museum

The latest new exhibition at the Sumida Hokusai Museum brings together two of the most famous and popular of Japan’s cultural exports – Katsushika Hokusai and the world of the samurai.

Hokusai and his students lived alongside samurai in their daily lives and these warriors would have been a familiar presence in the Edo of their day. Visitors can see how samurai, both famous warriors of old and those who lived alongside the artist during the long peace of the Edo period, were seen and depicted by Hokusai and his students.

The exhibition also features a special appearance by Hokusai’s most famous international work – The Great Wave as it’s known outside Japan. While visitors can see many artist depictions of samurai arms, armaments and armour, this is not all. The exhibition is also displaying two very impressive and historical swords, including a Tachi signed NOBUFUSA saku, which is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
