Hotels and the catering industries are fuelling jobs growth in the UK, according to the British Hospitality Association (BHA).
According to its new report, hospitality and tourism now makes up 10% of employment and is the fourth largest industry in the UK.
More than a quarter of job creation since 2010 is said to be under the industries and particularly helps the 18-24 year group. The association said 300,000 additional jobs could be created by 2020 if the Government improves the UK’s competitiveness.
“Either we are content with a ‘steady as she goes’ approach or we jointly pilot a path for a more ambitious strategy. Growth will be hard to maintain because of international competition and the weak economy,” said Ufi Ibrahim, chief executive of BHA.
Its members, which include Travelodge and Hilton, joined calls for tourism to be pushed further up the Government agenda.
“We have a real opportunity within our grasp, to create new jobs, upskill Britain, grow our industry and help our economy to recover,” said Travelodge’s CEO Grant Hearn.
