Iberia announced its new corporate look today as new airport statistics found Air Europa has overtaken the airline in the passenger number stakes.
The IAG-owned carrier has unveiled a new, ‘more dynamic’ image based on feedback from thousands of customers and as part of its turnaround plans.
A new livery design using the logo will first start operations in mid-November, with promotional and interiors to also be changed in the coming months.
Iberia has struggled to compete against rival Air Europa and newcomer Vueling amidst financial problems in Spain. Iberia’s owner IAG bought Vueling earlier this year to help its Spanish business grow, with chief executive Willie Walsh saying Vueling could one day overtake Iberia in passenger numbers.
However Air Europa already appears to have beaten Vueling to it, posting the highest passenger count this year so far based on statistics from Spanish Airports and Air Navigation (AENA).
Air Europa has increased its passenger number by 16% in the last year, while Iberia’s has dropped 33%.
The former first surpassed Iberia in March and for the year up to now has carried almost half a million more passengers than Iberia.
Colin Stewart, UK general manager of Air Europa said the airline will continue to expand its long-haul options, driving traffic from the UK through the Madrid hub and onwards.
“In 2014 and beyond, we intend to consolidate our status as the airline of choice to Latin America for leisure and business travel, connecting the UK and Europe to the region with great value for money and dedication to our passengers. In this way, we aim to continue growing in terms of passenger numbers, market share and destinations served,” he said.
Last week Reuters reported Air Europa is due to exercise the option for another eight Boeing 787-9 aircraft.
