India marks year-long Tagore celebrations

India has mounted a year-long celebration to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Noble Laureate Rabindranath Tagore.A highlight of the commemoration is the award instituted by the Government to honour a person who has made a distinguished contribution in promoting understanding among the nations of the world, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced. Interestingly, Bangladesh has also joined India in marking the anniversary celebrations. Tagore composed the National Anthems of both India and Bangladesh. He also won the Noble Prize for his collection of poems Gitanjali.He is known for his poems, paintings and writings to promote international understanding.
