India’s domestic aviation market continued to soar in April, according to the latest data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
Passenger demand, measured in revenue passenger kilometres (RPK), jumped 21.8% year-on-year during the month, meaning that Indian domestic air traffic has now registered double-digit growth for 20 consecutive months.
India has also been the fastest growing major domestic air market in the world for the past 13 months.
The average number of flight frequencies within India is scheduled to increase by 11.5% year-on-year in 2016. Domestic traffic in India now accounts for 1.2% of global aviation, approximately the same as Japan and slightly ahead of Australia.
India’s growth is being propelled by the comparatively strong economic backdrop and increases in service frequencies. In April, Indian airlines added 21.3% extra seat capacity on domestic routes, compared to the same month in 2016, and average load factors climbed to 84.3% – among the highest of any global market.
Global passenger traffic rose by 4.6% in April 2016, the slowest pace since January 2015.
