IndiGo has inaugurated non-stop flights connecting Mumbai, India, and Athens, Greece, marking a significant milestone as the first Indian airline to offer direct connectivity between the two countries. The service, launched on 23 January 2026, utilises India's first Airbus A321XLR aircraft. The airline will also connect Athens and Delhi starting 24 January, with plans to expand to more Greek destinations.
The new routes will operate thrice weekly, providing Greek travellers access to India's largest metro cities and IndiGo's extensive network across Asia. This development is further bolstered by a codeshare partnership with AEGEAN, Greece's largest carrier, allowing IndiGo to extend its reach to over 10 European destinations, including Italy, Spain, and Bulgaria. Conversely, AEGEAN customers will gain access to more than 10 destinations on IndiGo's network from Delhi and Mumbai.
Athens, a popular destination for Indian tourists, is expected to see increased interest for leisure, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions), and wedding tourism. Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, expressed enthusiasm about the new route, stating, โAthens is a very special destination for IndiGo as the first international route operated on Indiaโs first A321XLR aircraft, and makes IndiGo Indiaโs first carrier offering direct flights between India and Greece.โ
Yiannis Paraschis, CEO of Athens International Airport, highlighted the significance of this development, noting it as a milestone for tourism and economic ties between India and Greece. The A321XLR aircraft offers a dual-class configuration, with complimentary meals and a digital inflight entertainment experience, enhancing passenger comfort on this new route.
