Maldives sees 10% tourism surge as year-end arrivals break records

Once a little known clutch of islands, the jewel of the Andaman Sea now welcomes travellers from the four corners of the globe

In December 2025, the Maldives announced a record-breaking 224,455 international tourists, far surpassing the number seen at the end of February 2024.

This resulted in a total of around 2.25 million arrivals in total as of end-2025, a 9.8 percent increase from 2024 and the highest overall total in the history of Maldivian tourism.

The country’s 2025 numbers stand as proof of its growing popularity as a prime destination, especially for those seeking a hint of luxury in gorgeous tropical surroundings.

These also reflect the way air connectivity between the Maldives and the world has improved over the past half-decade, along with the opening of new resorts throughout the country, many of which are part of major global hospitality groups.

But what else is driving the tourism boom in the Maldives, specifically the growth of its luxury tourism and hospitality sectors?

Five factors for growth

To understand why tourism has grown significantly in the Maldives since the end of the pandemic is to consider five key points of development.

These are:

  • The promise of privacy and exclusivity The Maldives is known for a concept that has consistently driven up the arrivals numbers: one island, one resort. While this does not necessarily mean there’s just one resort in the country (far from it, as a matter of fact), every property on the island makes guests feel like they are at a getaway that is exclusive for their use. As a result, this has made high-net-worth individuals and celebrities opt to vacation in the Maldives or recover after shoots. This promise of exclusivity has also served to draw in those seeking to buy their own private islands to transform into their own fantasy escapes;
  • Dynamic development when it comes to luxury hospitality Luxury hospitality in the Maldives has evolved a great deal over the past five years, specifically with regard to the integration of wellness and personalisation options in resort offerings. Along with resorts offering guests a personal wellness and / or fitness regimen to take care of both their mental and physical health whilst travelling, we are also seeing the rapid emergence of personalised island tours that lean towards an individual traveller’s specific inclinations;
  • Sustainable luxury Maldivian hospitality firm Euconica reported in 2023 that ecotourism is one of the key factors driving the tourism boom into the country. To quote the report: “With an increasing number of travelers seeking sustainable and responsible travel options, the Maldives has been quick to respond. Many of the new luxury resorts in the Maldives are built with sustainability in mind, using eco-friendly materials and incorporating renewable energy sources.” Such developments are further bolstered by the way hotels are investing in renewable power, as well as the restoration of coral reefs in local waters and the island-wide ban on single-use plastics;
  • Significant investment and innovation There is a great deal of physical development happening throughout the Maldives, leading to the rapid evolution of architecture and design throughout the country. At the same time, Maldivian establishments are also offering truly unique experiences by way of underwater dining, overwater villas, and spas that offer the palpable illusion of getting treatments under the sea; and
  • Making local experiences more accessible to travellers Riding on the wave of immersive and experiential tourism, tourism boards and travel agencies in the Maldives seek to draw travellers away from the usual run of in-resort amenities, inviting them to hobnob with the locals to get a greater understanding and appreciation of the country’s amazing culture and traditions.
