Malaysia Airlines has seen cancellations and postponement of travel plans by passengers due to the influenza A(H1N1) virus, says its top executive.
“There are signs of people starting to cancel their flights or postponing their travel dates,” its managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Idris Jala told reporters on the sidelines of the IATA annual general meeting.
The deferring of air travel comes almost one month after Malaysia reported its first confirmed A(H1N1) case in May, with another five new cases recently.
However, Idris said these fears were unnecessary as the World Health Organisation has not recommended a travel ban related to the outbreak.
Earlier, IATA said that limiting travel and imposing travel restrictions would have very little effect on stopping the virus from spreading, but would be highly disruptive to the global community.
