The National Museum of Singapore (NMS) is marking the country's 60th anniversary of independence with two new experiences that delve into Singapore's rich history. These initiatives aim to showcase the nation's evolution from a settlement to a global city over the past 700 years.
Visitors can begin their journey with "Singapore Odyssea: A Journey Through Time" at the Shaw Foundation Glass Rotunda. This immersive multimedia experience, the first permanent gallery to reopen amid the museum's revamp, offers a unique introduction to Singapore's history. Using an RFID-enabled wristband, visitors can choose from nine "Magical Companions" inspired by local fauna to guide them through the exhibit, unlocking hidden content about Singapore's past.
The experience starts with a suspended LED globe that presents a light show mapping the maritime routes that have historically connected Singapore to the world. As visitors proceed through the gallery, they travel back in time via animated visual projections and soundscapes, culminating in a digital waterfall curtain that reveals significant historical moments.
The second experience, "Once Upon a Tide: Singapore's Journey from Settlement to Global City," runs until 9 October 2026. It explores the influence of the sea and river on Singapore's development from a 14th-century port to a modern metropolis. Featuring over 350 artefacts, the exhibition is divided into five thematic sections, each highlighting different facets of Singapore's growth. Interactive elements, such as the Sampan Challenge and a digital Singlish quiz, engage visitors in reflecting on Singapore's identity and future.
These experiences provide a comprehensive exploration of Singapore's history, encouraging visitors to reflect on the nation's journey and their role in its future. For more details, visit the National Museum's website or social media platforms.
