Newly launched ‘Terra Nova Expeditions’ to redefine Antarctic Adventure

Terra Nova Expeditions proudly announces its official launch, introducing a bold new approach to polar exploration. The company will set sail aboard one of Antarctica’s most unique fleets:  the legendary RMS St Helena, a former mail ship spectacularly converted into a 112-passenger expedition vessel with a remarkable history. She features an onboard science lab and is tailored to the budget-conscious traveller, with a thorough upgrade completed in 2025.

Founded by industry veteran and adventure travel entrepreneur Greg Carter, Terra Nova is Greg’s first  venture since co-founding the polar and Latin America specialist Chimu Adventures. He has assembled  a team of highly experienced professionals, including Beth Mercier, former Global Head of Sales at  Quark Expeditions, now onboard as Chief Commercial Officer. The wider team includes seasoned  expedition staff both onboard and ashore, drawn from across the polar travel sector. Terra Nova  Expeditions is an independent company founded by individuals from across the Antarctic sector. Its  mission is to make Antarctica more accessible while giving clients more time ashore than most  operators. Sustainability is central to Terra Nova’s approach, with a strong emphasis on lower  passenger numbers per voyage compared to the majority of other operators in the region.

Intimate exploration on Small Ship providing Big Adventures

With the St. Helena carrying just 112 passengers, the vessel is designed for intimate exploration,  offering more frequent and longer shore excursions than larger ships. This smaller group size allows  guests to fully immerse themselves in Antarctica’s pristine landscapes and abundant wildlife—free  from the crowds and constraints of mass-market cruises—all while enjoying a level of comfort that  exceeds expectations.

The vessel’s Antarctic programme will centre on responsible, low-impact travel aboard smaller ships,  in accordance with IAATO guidelines and Terra Nova’s commitment to environmental stewardship. All  voyages will be carbon-offset, and every departure will include integrated citizen science projects.

‘Day sailing in Antarctica’—a  global first

Terra Nova Expeditions is redefining polar travel with the introduction of day sailing in Antarctica—a  global first. Guests will have the unique opportunity to explore Antarctic waters aboard a second vessel, experiencing the untouched polar seas in a way never offered before. The company is also  rolling out additional cruise-and-sail combinations, another innovative first for the industry. Allowing passengers to enjoy the solitude of sailing with just six other guests in Antarctica, without having to  cross the Drake Passage under sail.

In another industry first, our vessel will be equipped with See-LEVEL VR headsets—cutting-edge  technology designed to reduce seasickness and enhance guest comfort.

Adventure Awaits, Without Extra Cost

More than just scenic cruising, Terra Nova’s expeditions include a wide range of adventure activities— all included in the trip cost, along with drinks at select meals, onboard yoga and wellness, Wi-Fi, and  gratuities:

  • Snowshoeing – Discover breathtaking vistas from otherwise inaccessible spots.
  • Kayaking – Paddle among towering icebergs and playful seals in crystal-clear waters.
  • Zodiac Cruises – Get close to wildlife and dramatic ice formations.
  • Hiking – With fewer than 100 guests ashore at any one time, enjoy some of the most

immersive, small-group landings available.

  • Camping – Available on select voyages for up to 30 guests per departure.
