Phuket is responsible for 30% of tourism to Thailand according to the national industry body. Speaking to press representatives, Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Deputy Governor Juthaporn Rerngron-Asa said Phuket contributed THB137 billion (US$4.4 billion) of Thailand’s THB570 billion tourism revenues. In order to maintain its position among the country’s top three earning provinces, local authorities are developing a special events calendar to promote the destination. A major event is the Andaman Travel Trade Exhibition which begins this week, with 320 agents and media expected to attend. Special attention is being given this year to representatives from Ranong, Satun and Trang, in order to open up new destinations for travellers who have stopped visiting Phuket since development really took hold.
