Qantas has released a statement reiterating its desire to reach amutual agreement with revolting worker unions and has encouraged them to agreeto an offer it tabled in March. The offer includes a 3% pay increase each yearfor three years and other improvements to conditions. However the union has notaccepted the offer and continues to make “unreasonable demands”, said the flagcarrier.
“Qantas licensed aircraft maintenance engineers are alreadythe highest paid in the world. The union is demanding guarantees that old workpractices remain in place despite new generation aircraft requiring lessmaintenance, less often,” Lyell Strambi, group executive operations at Qantas. “Ifthis was agreed to it would make Qantas significantly less competitive and holdus back from introducing modern maintenance techniques used by airlines aroundthe world”.
