The Rugby World Cup (RWC) 2011 has boosted hotel performance in Auckland and Wellington, New Zealand, according to data from STR Global. Both cities have experienced inflated occupancy levels throughout the event and steep increases in average daily rate (ADR) on game days, albeit to varying levels of growth and duration.
Wellington has experienced very strong ADR growth on match nights, reaching almost 300% year on year ADR growth during the quarter final on 8 October. However occupancy dropped sharply the following day, down 16% compared to the same day last year, while ADR retracted to normal levels two days later. Fans travelling to the capital have tended to stay for just one night on game days before continuing on to other parts of the country.
Meanwhile in Auckland, the pattern has been slightly different during the qualifying matches with ADR growth starting the night prior to games and lasting for two consecutive nights, thus allowing hoteliers to benefit longer.
