The cream leather seats, accentuated by wood panel finishings across the cabin, offer enhanced comfort with a 38-inch pitch, 19.5-inch-wide seats that recline 8 inches providing more space for stretching and relaxing, in addition to 6-way adjustable headrests. Set with 38 seats in a 1-2-1 configuration, each ergonomic 20.7-inch-wide seat converts to a spacious flat bed which reclines up to 78.6 inches. The Emirates Boeing 777 Business Class cabin will also include a small bar for customers to quickly grab mid-flight snacks and refreshments. The new Economy Class cabin features 256 seats in a colour palette of soft greys and blues. The ergonomically designed seats also include full leather headrests with flexible side panels that can also be adjusted vertically for optimum support. Emirates’ signature ghaf tree motif also features prominently throughout the interiors. Emirates will be refurbishing another 80 Boeing 777 aircraft as part of its investment of over US$3 billion to deliver best-in-industry products that elevate the customer experience in the skies. In addition to Geneva, the airline will deploy its upgraded Boeing 777s with new cabins to Tokyo Haneda and Brussels in the next few weeks, and more destinations to be served with this aircraft type will be announced soon. The refurbishment work on the Boeing 777 was conceptualised, designed, and executed inhouse by a dedicated team of 175 engineers and technicians at Emirates Engineering in Dubai, with a laser focus on the highest quality and safety standards. The project’s considerable impact on the local aviation eco-system is evident through the more than 10 major partners who have hired hundreds of skilled workers and set up workshops both at the Engineering facility and offsite to support the various aspects of the refurbishment programme. The first B777 took 37 days and 18,000 manhours to finish as teams operated round the clock in a chronological sequence of work, from the removal of interiors, all the way to reinstallation and testing of the new seats and other cabin components. To deliver the first Boeing 777 refurbished aircraft, the airline used a total of: • 330 square metres of carpets • 340 laminate sheets • 8,000 square feet of leather for First, Business and Premium Economy Class seats • 800 metres of fabric for Economy Class seats • 300 litres of paint The airline has earmarked 191 Boeing 777 and Airbus A380 aircraft for a full facelift as part of the largest known retrofit programme the industry has seen in scale and size. Once the project is complete, the airline will have installed 8,104 next-generation Premium Economy seats, 1,894 refreshed First-Class suites, 11,182 upgraded Business Class seats and 21,814 Economy Class seats. Emirates currently operates its refurbished aircraft to New York JFK, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, London Heathrow, Sydney, Auckland, Christchurch, Melbourne, Singapore, Mumbai, Bangalore, Sao Paulo, Tokyo Narita, Osaka, Geneva and Dubai.

Air New Zealand’s last 777-300 returns from Mojave Desert ready for service

The last Air New Zealand’s 777 aircraft stored in the Mojave Desert during the pandemic is set to touch down in Auckland, after more than 855 days in storage. When Covid hit in 2020 and aircraft around the world were grounded, all seven of the airline’s 777 aircraft were taken and put into deep storage. Three were stored in Auckland, while the remaining four were stored in the desert near Victorville, USA, as the warm and dry conditions were ideal to keep the aircraft in pristine condition. Now the aircraft, registration OKM, is making the more than 10,000km journey from Victorville to Auckland via Singapore, before it gets ready to take off on its first commercial service on May 13 to San Francisco. Air New Zealand’s Chief Operations Officer Alex Marren says the return of all seven of aircraft signals the airline has bounced back after Covid and customer demand is higher than ever. “Having all of our 777-300s back will help build more resilience and more seats into our international operation, meaning we can fly more customers to where they need to go - whether that’s San Francisco, Honolulu, Houston or Tahiti!,” she says. “An incredible amount of work has gone into bringing these aircraft back. The reanimation of OKM alone has taken more than seven weeks and involved more than 1500 manhours of work.” A team of Air New Zealand engineers have been in Victorville working with a local maintenance provider to reanimate the aircraft. "The process starts off with unwrapping the plane from its storage protection and then it gets a good wash, getting rid of the dust and grime that has accumulated in the desert. Then it goes through a thorough servicing and maintenance programme. It’s a long and a complicated process and our engineering and maintenance team have done an amazing job getting the aircraft ready to fly again.” As a final safety check, a pilot team spend a day running through checks and tests, similar to what’s done when getting a new aircraft from the factory. “Overall a team of more 100 Air New Zealanders have been involved in bringing back these 777 aircrafts in some way.” OKM will undergo a short visit to the Auckland engineering and maintenance hangar before NZ8 takes off to San Francisco this weekend. “We’re really excited to be bringing these aircraft back into our skies for years to come.”

Air New Zealand Brings Back 777S From Mojave Desert

After over 700 days of storage in the California desert, Air New Zealand has begun reviving the first of its Boeing 777-300s in preparation for its return to passenger service. This follows the February return of the airline’s first 777-300 to serve as a freight aircraft. 2020 saw four of Air New Zealand’s seven Boeing 777s being placed in long-term storage at the Victorville facility in California’s Mojave Desert, considering the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. A spokesperson for the airline said on Tuesday that due to the “sheer demand for flights,” the company will resume using its wide-body jets that had been stored in the desert. The first of four B777s is scheduled to be retrieved from the desert and put back into service by the airline over the next several months. On August 13, 2020, the plane was shipped to a new home in Victorville, and it won’t be leaving until later this month, 2021. As Air New Zealand’s Chief Operating Officer Alex Marren put it, “no one could ever forecast what would happen in the pandemic,” and given that “demand has come back quicker than anticipated,” they felt it was time to return the planes back from Victorville. Our 777 fleet needed a warm, dry place to be parked, and we made the difficult decision that the desert would be perfect for it. They’ve been in long-term storage for about two years, and they’re still in good shape. Working with a local maintenance contractor, our crew has estimated that it will take six to eight weeks to get the 777-300 back in flying condition. After a thorough cleaning, engineers remove the covers from the plane’s wheels, windows, sensors, and wings. This is what Marren says happens. Once the inspection is complete, the plane must go through a “thorough servicing and maintenance programme” before it can fly passengers again. He added that the jets had been maintained throughout their time in California and that a lot of work is involved in getting them ready to welcome customers back on board. This included servicing the wheels on the landing gear and examining the upholstery and in-flight entertainment system. The 777-300 is our largest widebody plane, with space for 342 passengers and 154 cubic metres of cargo. Additional 777-300 flights will greatly improve New Zealand’s ability to connect to the rest of the world, he said. In order to keep up with demand, we have had to rehire flight attendants, pilots, and engineers since these planes have returned to service; it’s great to see so many people interested in coming back to the airline industry again. Our pilots and flight attendants are eager to get back to work so that they may carry passengers from Auckland to San Francisco, Sydney, Melbourne, and beyond. The operational aircrew will be relieved to be flying a different type of route than they were during the height of the pandemic and, for some, returning to the 777-300 after more than two years will be an emotional reunion with one of their favourite planes.
