Airbus secures THAI A320 cabin retrofit deal

Airbus has reached an agreement with Thai Airways International Public Company Limited (THAI) to retrofit its fleet of 20 A320ceo aircraft with reclining business class seats, marking the Airbus’ first-ever cabin retrofit for a single-aisle fleet in the Asia-Pacific region. This initiative aligns with THAI's commitment to enhance passenger comfort and experience, following the integration of its former subsidiary, Thai Smile Airways, into the parent company beginning of this year. Under this agreement, Airbus Services will oversee the installation of 12 business class seats on each A320ceo. Featuring a backrest that reclines up to eight inches, these seats will offer passengers a relaxed sitting position. The retrofitting project is slated to commence by the end of the year. Upon completion, the A320s will transition to a two-class configuration, comprising 12 business class and 144 economy seats, delivering an enhanced travel experience across all cabin classes. This transformation marks a change from the previous all-economy class configuration, which accommodated between 168 to 174 passengers. As of April 2024, THAI operates a modern, yet diverse Airbus fleet consisting of 20 A320s, three A330-300s, and 20 A350-900s. Chai Eamsiri, THAI Chief Executive Officer, said, “The acquisition of 20 A320 aircraft from THAI Smile Airways has benefited THAI’s route network, as well as strengthened fleet efficiency and enhanced our competitiveness in the market. The fleet will serve THAI’s domestic and regional operations aiming to provide customers with seamless and convenient flight connectivity. In addition, the retrofit of reclining business seats in the aircraft will offer passengers with more comfort while their travel experiences will be elevated and enhanced throughout their flight journey.” Cristina Aguilar, Senior Vice President Customer Services added, "We are thrilled to embark on this cabin retrofit project with Thai Airways. This agreement underscores our commitment to enhancing passenger comfort and delivering exceptional travel experiences. We look forward to seeing these upgraded A320ceo aircraft take to the skies, offering passengers unparalleled comfort with the new reclining business class seats."

Thai Airways Installs Royal Silk Business Class Seats on A320s

Thai Airways has announced a series of upgrades and expansions as part of its ongoing rehabilitation plan. The airline confirmed installing Royal Silk business class recliners in a 2-2 configuration on its Airbus A320 aircraft inherited from Thai Smile. These aircraft, the first narrowbody aircraft in Thai Airways’ fleet in decades, are deployed on the carrier’s domestic routes and select regional destinations. The decision to upgrade the seating configuration comes after the airline folded the Thai Smile subsidiary into its mainline operation and took over Thai Smile’s A320 aircraft. Initially, Thai Airways retained Thai Smile’s ‘premium’ cabin on the aircraft, which meant a 3-3 configuration with a blocked middle seat in Royal Silk. However, this proved unpopular with passengers. In addition to the seating upgrade, Thai Airways continues its rapid expansion in line with its rehabilitation plan. This includes adding three more new-technology Airbus A350-900 aircraft in the first quarter. The flag carrier recently committed to a firm order for 45 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, plus 35 options, and it also signed leasing agreements for additional A350-900s, 787-9s and its first A321 neo aircraft. Thai Airways also announced changes to its flight schedule for the summer of 2024. The airline plans to increase the frequency of flights to Sydney, Taipei, Tokyo, Kunming, Chengdu, and Phuket. It will also resume flights to Perth and Colombo from 31 March to Milan and Oslo from 1 July. The Bangkok-based airline further confirmed its plans to launch a new route to Kochi, India. India ranks among Thailand’s ‘Top 5’ inbound tourism markets, along with China and Russia. Thailand recently signed an agreement with China and Russia to permit longer stays of up to 90 days to boost tourism, while Indians currently enjoy visa exemption. These changes reflect Thai Airways’ commitment to enhancing passenger comfort and expanding its global footprint as it continues to navigate its way through its financial rehabilitation plan. Fifth A320neo with the registration LZR lands at Austrian Airlines in Vienna

Austrian Airlines welcomes an early "New Year's baby" and receives another aircraft from the Airbus factory in Toulouse on the New Year's Eve weekend. The fifth A320neo, which will fly in white until its final livery with the Austrian livery in spring, landed today at 11.46 a.m.. The new short and medium-haul aircraft with the registration LZR comes directly from the Airbus factory in Toulouse and is expected to take the first passengers to their destinations in just a few weeks. The aircraft with the Thayatal registration will complete the A320neo fleet of the red-white-red home airline.  The first four A320neo aircraft were already integrated into the Austrian fleet between August 2022 and July 2023. Depending on the route, the operation of an Airbus A320neo can save up to 3,700 tons of CO2 per year compared to the respective predecessor model, as they consume up to 20 percent less fuel thanks to modern engine technology and improved aerodynamics. The new aircraft thus make an important contribution to Austrian Airlines' fuel efficiency, increase profitability and at the same time represent an important long-term investment in Vienna as a business location. "The arrival of our fifth A320neo is a wonderful end to the year for Austrian Airlines and a gift for our passengers, who can look forward to even more travel comfort on board. In the coming years, Austrian Airlines will modernize both its short and medium-haul fleet as well as its long-haul fleet. The use of modern and fuel-efficient aircraft is, alongside the use of sustainable fuels, the greatest lever for achieving our ambitious climate targets," says Austrian Airlines COO Francesco Sciortino. Innovative Airspace Cabin increases comfort The fifth aircraft, which now has a capacity of 180 seats, will further enhance travel comfort on short and medium-haul routes. Thanks to the innovative Airspace Cabin and slimmer side walls, passengers are offered even more personal space, particularly in the shoulder area. Compared to the previous design, the new cabin concept is also characterized by an up to 60 percent larger capacity for hand baggage. In addition, a new, flexible lighting system that adapts to passengers' natural biorhythms increases their sense of well-being on board. Depending on the flight phase and time of day, the cabin and washrooms are bathed in warm red or cooler blue tones.

SriLankan Airlines boosts fleet with addition of Airbus A320 4R – ABS

SriLankan Airlines has added a newly leased Airbus A320 aircraft bearing the serial number 4R – ABS to the fleet bumping up its total aircraft count to 22. Leased for six years, the aircraft arrived from Malaysia to Colombo last night (21 December 2023) and will be put into service immediately after customization and branding. Its inaugural scheduled flight is currently expected to take place on 29 December ’23 to the Maldives. The aircraft is notably equipped with Sharklet wingtips that reduce drag and increase fuel efficiency. It will be primarily deployed on the airline’s short and medium-haul routes covering the Indian subcontinent, the Far East, and the Middle East. With a configuration of 12 Business Class seats and 138 Economy Class seats, 4R – ABS will allow SriLankan to increase its seat capacity on these routes. SriLankan Airlines now has 12 narrow-bodied aircraft and 10 wide-bodied aircraft in its fleet. The year has been challenging for SriLankan and the whole industry with shortages of available aircraft and engines, and supply chain issues extending maintenance times. This has led to a reduction in flights. However, this aircraft is the first of a number of aircraft and engines that will boost the fleet in the coming weeks. By the start of January 2024, SriLankan expects another three aircraft to be flying with the addition of a wet leased A330 and the arrival of two more engines. The airline will also be taking another sister aircraft to 4R – ABS that is scheduled to arrive in March 2024. SriLankan Airlines currently maintains direct operations between Colombo and 36 cities in 21 countries and is a member of the oneworld Alliance.
