Icelandair becomes the first airline to launch BAGTAG crew solution

Icelandair announces the launch of the BAGTAG Crew Solution. After a successful PoC, they are introducing the innovation upcoming October, making Icelandair the first airline to introduce the baggage check-in technology specifically designed for crew members. This revolutionary solution brings enhanced efficiency and convenience to the airline’s operations. The BAGTAG Crew Solution represents a significant leap forward in crew baggage management. By replacing traditional paper tags with electronic bag tags, Icelandair allows its crew members to streamline check-in procedures, eliminate paper waste and optimize the overall crew travel experience. “We are always looking for ways to improve efficiency within our operations. This simple, smart and environmentally-friendly solution will both streamline our processes and support our mission of offering smooth and enjoyable journeys – not only for our customers but also for our crew” – Haukur Reynisson, Vice President of Flight Operations Icelandair. The solution leverages backwards compatible plug and-play technology to simplify processes, reduce errors, and enhance baggage handling efficiency. Crew members can wirelessly transfer baggage information directly to the electronic tags via a secure connection using  the Icelandair crew application. The required DCS connection to retrieve the baggage information was set up with BAGTAG partner Amadeus. As an Amadeus Altéa airline, Icelandair connected to the BAGTAG platform in a matter of weeks, enabling quick initiation of the PoC and integration of the solution. The electronic tags prominently display all relevant baggage information, including crew details, flight information, and bag identification, ensuring a seamless and streamlined experience for the airline’s crew. “We are thrilled to partner with Icelandair in launching the BAGTAG Crew Solution. Through this partnership, we will demonstrate the added value our crew solution can bring to the crew baggage handling process. We look forward to build on the success of our joint PoC and the potential it delivers for further advancements. – Jasper Quak, Managing Director BAGTAG. Upcoming October, the Icelandair crew will receive custom suitcases with a permanent BAGTAG.

Icelandair Q2 Results, highest profit since 2016

Icelandair shows profit of USD 13.7 million in Q2 – Highest since 2016.   EBIT of USD 20.9 million, up by USD 19.6 million year-on-year. EBIT ratio 5%, improving by 4.7 percentage points between years. Profit of USD 13.7 million compared to USD 3.8 million in Q2 last year. Record operating income of USD 414.2 million, increasing by 26% year-on-year Record Q2 unit revenue (RASK) of 8.6 US cents, increasing by 8% year-on-year Leasing revenue up 41% year-on-year resulting in strong protability. Capacity increased by 17% year-on-year in the passenger network 2 million passengers carried; 19% more than in Q2 last year. Load factor of 83.6%, especially strong demand on North American routes Strong operating cash ow resulting in highest ever liquidity position of USD 521.2 million. Forward bookings for the next six months strong and above last year. Bogi Nils Bogason, President & CEO said: “Thanks to the outstanding work of our employees, we are proud to deliver the strongest results in the second quarter since 2016. Achieving a prot of USD 13.7 million was driven by record passenger revenue, historically high load factor, and improved yields in all our markets. Lower fuel costs due to the efciency of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft and lower fuel prices also contributed positively to the results. In addition, our leasing business continued to perform very well and deliver strong protability. Delays in maintenance projects and implementation of aircraft led to aircraft shortage which we addressed by leasing additional aircraft in June to ensure the reliability of our ambitious ight schedule. This led to one-off costs that negatively impacted the Q2 results. Our cargo operation remained challenging, but we rmly believe that we will turn it around within the next few months with our strong focus on restoring protability. Bearing this in mind, the Q2 results demonstrate a strong underlying nancial performance and give us great condence for the future. All in all, the rst six months of the year have been eventful as we have prepared for our largest ight schedule yet when it comes to the number of destinations and frequency of ights. We introduced ve new destinations, implemented six new aircraft, carried 1.8 million passengers and recruited and trained almost 1,200 employees. The prospects for the second half of the year remain favorable with continued strong bookings, particularly from North America. Demand for ights to and from Iceland has been strong over the past months. Capacity through Keavik airport has also increased sharply to 20% above pre-Covid levels this summer and even more into next winter. This development is expected to impact yields and revenue growth in some markets in the second half of the year. However, we are well equipped to adapt to market conditions at any given time with our valuable infrastructure, very strong liquidity, and excellent team of employees. Our EBIT margin forecast for the full year remains unchanged in the 4-6% range and we therefore expect to deliver net prot for the full year of 2023.”

Icelandair celebrated the commencement of its service to the Czech capital city, Prague, from Keflavík Airport in Reykjavik. The new seasonal service will operate four times a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays, through to October 2023. Upon landing, the passengers were welcomed to the city with a stately water salute from local fire trucks as the plane made its way to the terminal. The historic city of Prague’s popularity is ever-growing as a travel destination, and is a welcome addition to Icelandair’s strong network, for both connecting passengers and Icelanders alike. Bogi Nils Bogason, CEO of Icelandair: “Prague is an exciting addition to our strong summer schedule. The city has a lot to offer, including culture, art, history and cuisine. We see great opportunities in offering a morning flight to Prague that ties in well with our North American flights. Icelandair celebrates five years of flying from Dublin

Today on 8th May Icelandair celebrates five years since it first began flying from Dublin, with the airline’s inaugural flight taking place on 8th May 2018. Since then, Iceland has become a popular destination for Irish people and vice versa, as the route has seen sustained commercial success. Launching with 6 flights weekly in the inaugural schedule, the service has seen an increase to 9 flights a week for summer 2023 (starting from June). The addition to Icelandair’s network has provided Irish travellers the option to fly direct from Dublin to Iceland, offering domestic & Greenland connections, as well as onward journeys to 15 destinations in North America, helping consolidate and strengthen the connecting flight service to and from the USA + Canada. The appeal for Irish people of a stopover before travelling on to America or Canada is a significant part of the offering, with the ability to add a 1-to-7-day stopover in Iceland at no additional airfare, allowing travellers to explore the wonders of Iceland when flying transatlantic - experiencing two destinations in one trip! Commenting on the significant anniversary, Icelandair CEO Bogi Nils Bogason said: “We hope people in Ireland will join us as we toast to many more years of adventure and exploration. Icelandair strives to continue offering a best-in-class service to those in Ireland as they explore the natural wonders of Iceland and travel beyond in North America.”

Icelandair and Airbus sign MOU for the purchase of upto 25 Airbus A321XLR aircraft

Icelandair and Airbus have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the purchase of 13 Airbus A321XLR aircraft with purchase rights for additional 12 aircraft. The aircraft deliveries will start in 2029.   Icelandair, however, plans to start operating Airbus aircraft in 2025 and is currently in advanced stage of negotiations in relation to four leased Airbus A321LR for that purpose. Further additions can be expected in the years thereafter. With the acquisition of the Airbus aircraft, Icelandair will complete the replacement of the Boeing 757. The agreed purchase price of the 13 aircraft is confidential. The financing of the aircraft is yet to be determined but the Company will explore financing options closer to the delivery dates. The A321XLR and A321LR aircraft are part of the Airbus A320neo Family of narrow-body aircraft that provide excellent range, fuel efficiency and lower carbon emissions. The implementation of the aircraft will reduce operating costs, further support Icelandair’s sustainability targets and offer exceptional customer experience through the aircraft design and unique features. The aircraft has around 190 seats in Icelandair’s layout. In comparison, the Boeing 757-200 aircraft has 183, whereas the 737 MAX 8 and the 737 MAX 9 have a passenger capacity of 160 and 178, respectively. The A321XLR aircraft has a range of up to 4,700 nautical miles (8,700 km), allowing Icelandair to operate it on its long-range destinations with opportunities to enter new markets. The A321LR aircraft has a range of up to 4,000 nautical miles (7,400 km) and will thus be able to service Icelandair’s current route network. The Boeing 757,767 and 737 MAX aircraft will continue to be important for Icelandair’s operations in the coming years. Icelandair has had a successful relationship with Boeing for decades and the aircraft have been a key to Icelandair’s success in the past. Until 2025, Icelandair will continue to operate a full Boeing fleet but following the first deliveries from Airbus, the Company will operate a mixed fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft. Bogi Nils Bogason, President & CEO of Icelandair: “We are happy to announce that we have now reached a conclusion regarding Icelandair’s future fleet. We have decided that the capable and fuel-efficient Airbus aircraft, A321XLR and A321LR, will become the successors of the Boeing 757 we are gradually retiring. The Boeing 757 has been the cornerstone of Icelandair’s operations since 1990. Its unique capabilities have underpinned the successful development of our extensive route network and competitive transatlantic hub by leveraging Iceland’s unique geographical location to connect North America and Europe via Iceland. The excellent Airbus aircraft will not only allow us to further develop our proven business model around transatlantic flights but also open opportunities for future growth by entering new and exciting markets.” Icelandair is the national airline of Iceland. Since its establishment in 1937, Icelandair has continuously expanded its route network, taking advantage of Iceland's unique geographical location as a hub midway between Europe and North America. In 2019, Icelandair carried 4.7 million passengers to 42 destinations in Europe and North America. The networks of Icelandair and Air Iceland Connect (AIC), which were recently merged into one strong network, are part of the Icelandair Group. The company is active in air cargo, logistics, aircraft leasing, consultancy and travel services. Icelandair Group is listed on Nasdaq Iceland.
