Signed at Ethiopian Airlines' headquarters in Addis Ababa, this strategic partnership also includes a codeshare arrangement, unlocking greater travel opportunities for passengers across both networks. As part of this collaboration, the airlines are launching new flights between Abu Dhabi and Addis Ababa, strengthening ties between the two regions. Ethiopian Airlines will commence services from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD) to Zayed International Airport (AUH) on 15 July, while Etihad Airways will introduce daily flights to Addis Ababa starting 1 October. Subject to regulatory approval, the Etihad – Ethiopian JV will enable both airlines to collaborate in developing and expanding routes between the UAE and Ethiopia, as well as enhancing connectivity across their respective networks. Air Arabia launches new non-stop flights to Ethiopia
Air Arabia, the Middle East and North Africa’s first and largest low-cost carrier (LCC) operator, announced the launch of its new non-stop flights to Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia. Starting 30th January, the new service will connect Sharjah International Airport with Addis Ababa Bole International Airport with a frequency of three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Ethiopian Airlines crash leaves ‘no survivors’
An Ethiopian Airlines jet crashed six minutes after it took off from Addis Ababa leaving no survivors. The airline said that all 157 souls were lost in the crash of flight ET302 that was heading to Nairobi. It said 32 Kenyans, 18 Canadians, eight Americans and seven British nationals were among the passengers. The cause of the disaster is still unknown and the airline confirmed that investigation is still ongoing. The pilot had reported difficulties and requested to return to the airport. The plane reported that its vertical speed was unstable after take off. The plane crashed near Bishoftu. Immediately, recovery operations were underway near the crash site. However, witnesses at the scene claimed that the aircraft was in an intense fire as it hit the ground. "At this stage, we cannot rule out anything," Ethiopian Airlines CEO Tewolde Gebremariam told reporters at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa. "We cannot also attribute the cause to anything because we will have to comply with the international regulation to wait for the investigation." Important victims The airlines confirmed that victims included 32 Kenyans, 18 Canadians, nine Ethiopians, eight Italians, eight Chinese, eight Americans, seven Britons, seven French citizens, six Egyptians, five Germans, four Indians and four people from Slovakia. Three Austrians, three Swedes, three Russians, two Moroccans, two Spaniards, two Poles and two Israelis were also on the flight. There was also one passenger each from Ireland, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Djibouti, Belgium, Indonesia, Somalia, Norway, Serbia, Togo, Mozambique, Rwanda, Sudan, Uganda and Yemen. Boeing 737 Max-8 The same plane model was involved in a crash less than five months ago when Lion Air plummeted in the sea in Indonesia with nearly 190 souls on board. On 29 October 2018, Lion Air Flight 610, Boeing 737 MAX 8 registration PK-LQP, crashed into the Java Sea 13 minutes after take-off from Soekarno–Hatta International Airport, Jakarta, Indonesia. The aircraft was delivered to Lion Air two months prior. In the case of Ethiopian Airlines, the aircraft is only four months old. This reignited the speculations that the airplane model could be at fault. Following the Lion Air accident, Boeing issued an operational manual guidance, advising airlines on how to address erroneous cockpit readings. The 737 MAX's Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) has come under scrutiny for faulty angle-of-attack readings in these two crashes.

Kenya Calling: flydubai Adds Nairobi, Ups Mombasa Flights
Dubai-based carrier flydubai has announced a major expansion of its East African footprint with the launch of new flights to Nairobi, Kenya, beginning October 15, 2025. The route will operate four times a week from Terminal 3, Dubai International Airport (DXB) to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi, offering a significant boost to UAE–Kenya air connectivity. In addition to the capital city launch, flydubai is also ramping up its presence on Kenya’s coast, upgrading its existing Mombasa route to daily service from October 1, 2025. This will bring the airline’s total weekly flights to Kenya to 11, further underscoring its strategic commitment to the region. “Kenya is an important market for flydubai, and we are pleased to strengthen our operations with the addition of Nairobi and the increased frequency of our service to Mombasa,” said Ghaith Al Ghaith, Chief Executive Officer at flydubai. “These flights underline the importance of connecting Kenya to Dubai’s global aviation hub, enhancing access for trade, travel and tourism between our two countries,” he added. Since its launch, flydubai has steadily expanded its African operations, with the Nairobi service marking its 12th destination on the continent. Other destinations in its growing Africa network include Alexandria, Addis Ababa, Cairo, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Djibouti, and Entebbe, among others. The carrier views Kenya as a critical node in linking the Middle East with East Africa, particularly as demand rises from business travelers, leisure tourists, and diaspora communities. Sudhir Sreedharan, Divisional Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations (UAE, GCC, Africa and South Asia) at flydubai, added: “This expansion provides more convenient options for customers from the UAE and across our network to access Kenya, whether they are travelling for business, leisure or to visit friends and family. Etihad Cargo Strengthens Connectivity
Etihad Cargo, the cargo and logistics arm of Etihad Airways, has announced an expanded winter schedule that will significantly increase belly-hold cargo capacity and enhance connectivity across its global network. The updated schedule introduces new routes to Hanoi, Hong Kong and Taipei, strengthening the carrier’s operations in Asia and providing greater access to some of the world’s fastest-growing cargo markets. To meet strong demand, Etihad Cargo will benefit from increased frequencies to a number of existing destinations, including Lisbon, Manchester, Warsaw, Atlanta and Bangkok, further reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s role as a leading global logistics hub. Between November 2025 and March 2026, Etihad Airways will progressively launch services to 16 new destinations, including Addis Ababa, Algiers, Almaty, Baku, Bucharest, Chiang Mai, Kazan, Krabi, Medan, Medina, Phnom Penh, Tashkent, Tbilisi and Yerevan. By October 2025, Etihad Cargo will provide belly-hold capacity on over 880 passenger flights each week, rising to more than 1,000 flights weekly by March 2026, further strengthening global connectivity and customer choice.
