Hotel Arts Barcelona: Spain’s swankiest hotel is an art and design lover’s paradise

In a tete-a-tete with Travel Daily, Andreas Oberoi, general manager of Hotel Arts Barcelona spills the beans about how art is at the core of everything at the stunning Hotel Arts Barcelona. The resort aims to immerse its guests in the culture of the city as it features over 500 pieces of original art by contemporary Catalan and Spanish artists throughout the property. Excerpts: TD: How has the hotel positioned itself in the luxury space in Barcelona? Could you elaborate on its luxury offerings? AO: The iconic Hotel Arts Barcelona is a beachside, urban resort located in the city of Barcelona, and the first luxury hotel in the area. Styled to embrace the destination’s defining legacy, it stands as the tallest building in the city, with a contemporary glass and steel design. Encompassing the artistic persona of the location, the landscape is characterised by the striking Frank Gehry fish sculpture that shifts in color and appearance as the sun moves. Hotel Arts Barcelona combines genuine luxury with individual and personalized service, all provided by a well-connected and passionate hospitality team of Ladies and Gentlemen. The waterfront hotel’s 455 rooms and 28 exclusive The Penthouses feature sleek, modern design complemented by an impressive 20th century collection of works by contemporary Catalan and Spanish artists. Hotel Arts is one of the premier culinary destinations in Barcelona with 2 Michelin-starred Enoteca helmed by the illustrious, 5 Michelin-starred chef Paco Perez. Guests seeking a serene escape may enjoy signature treatments by renowned Spanish skin-care brand Natura Bisse overlooking the Mediterranean Sea at 43 The Spa. With over 3,000 square-feet of function space overlooking the Mediterranean in Arts 41, for board meetings and conferences as well as social events, weddings and celebrations and an additional 24,000 square-feet of function space, the hotel boasts of big MICE space. TD: Could you tell us more about how the hotel is using the art experience to elevate the experience of the travellers?  AO: Encompassing the artistic persona of the location, the landscape is characterised by the striking Frank Gehry fish sculpture that shifts in color and appearance as the sun moves. The hotel is impossible to miss thanks to Frank Henry’s sculpture, a 52m-long goldfish located right in front The sculpture is perhaps the most impressive piece of art at the Hotel Arts Barcelona. This giant goldfish, located just at the foot of the hotel and seemingly ready to jump into the blue waters of the Mediterranean, is a truly stunning sight. The sculpture is made from the same steel exoskeleton as Hotel Arts and is meant to complement and strengthen the tower and its presence, as well as create much stronger public space that fit beautifully with the hotel functions. Frank Gehry’s fish is especially beautiful during the day as sunlight is reflected off the scales of the sculpture and combined with a dazzling waterfront view, it creates a truly unforgettable scene. Art is the core of Hotel Arts Barcelona. The resort aims to immerse its guests in the culture of the city as it features over 500 pieces of original art by contemporary Catalan and Spanish artists throughout the property. The hotel art collection includes works by Manolo Valdes, Luis Feito, Jose Manuel Broto, Perico Pastor and many other distinguished artists of the region. Guests can find original pieces of art in every area of the hotel. For instance, P41 Bar, named for Parallel 41, the latitude where the city of Barcelona is located, features striking art installations, including one by the multidisciplinary artist Inocuo rendered in ceramic. Inocuo’s artwork represents a liquid mapping of parallel 41, reinforcing the core concept with a flight-map layer of copper fibers that radiate from key points of Parallel 41 like a global metadata network, capturing the true essence of the venue. The interiors of the Hotel Arts Barcelona penthouses deserve special attention. They were created by Jaime Tresserra, the well-known Catalan designer, who played with shape in his designs through the employment of the revered arts of hand-craftsmanship and artisan, and through the utilization of only the highest quality materials. Art is the hotel’s common thread and leitmotif. With such strong focus on art and design, Hotel Arts Barcelona aims to immerse guests in the culture of the city of Barcelona and transforms their stay into something absolutely remarkable. The art approach is not limited to the interior and exterior of the hotel. Art can be found everywhere here – whether it’s haute cuisine from gastronomic artist Paco Perez at the Enoteca restaurant or the signature spa treatments at the 43 the Spa, the exceptional service of the hotel is also a special form of art that deserves attention. Recently partnered with national gallery, We Collect, to showcase the best up and coming talent from Spain and local Barcelona artists. Each month, the hotel will host exhibitions of traditional and urban art in an open space for guests and visitors to admire.   TD: Considering that travel in Spain is recovering at a massive speed, how has the hotel performed in the last few months? AO: The hotel has seen a gradual increase in bookings over the last few months and is projected to be at high capacity throughout the summer season. TD: Could you tell us more about the iconic spa and how it is promoting wellness travel.  AO: Floating high above the city, 43 The Spa is an extraordinary setting delivering organic luxury and a sense of wellbeing. Housed across the 42nd and 43rd floors and bathed in natural light, the spa offers an extensive menu of treatments by Natura Bissé, eight treatment rooms and open-air relaxation terraces. A wet zone incorporating saunas, Klafs color therapy steam rooms, vitality pools and ice fountain create a unique atmosphere of calm and rejuvenation. For those keen to maintain levels of fitness, The Gym has been created with a holistic approach where carefully balanced fitness plans and classes are customized by trained professionals. Additionally, 43 The Spa offers Rossano Ferretti Hair Salon and Niche Parfumes Boutique. TD: What are the key initiatives the hotel has taken in the post-Covid world? With in-person gatherings back on the table, Hotel Arts Barcelona launched a series of summer programs.  The programs offer a perfect Mediterranean experience with the launch of Marina Coastal Club. A coveted resort-style destination in its own right, the new concept brings together four distinctive alfresco venues under one overarching identity that celebrates laidback coastal living with all of the perks of a luxury beach retreat. Boasting stunning panoramic views from its unique location on the waterfront, Marina Coastal Club offers a wonderfully serene spot for swimming, socialising to live music and dining on some of the best Mediterranean food in the city. Culinary lovers can indulge with the Two Michelin Star experience, where Chef Paco Pérez curates a special tasting menu. Costa Cruises christens its new LNG-powered flagship in Barcelona

Costa Cruises today celebrated in the port of Barcelona, Spain, the christening ceremony of Costa Toscana, the newest Italian-flagged ship in the Costa Cruises fleet, with the theme of “The Art of Living the Sea.” Godmother of Costa Toscana is Chanel, a young singer, actress and dancer who enjoyed great success in Spain and across Europe after her performance during the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest. She joined Captain Pietro Sinisi for the ribbon-cutting ceremony where a bottle of Italian sparkling wine was broken on the ship’s hull in a time-honored maritime tradition. The event was hosted by two exceptional masters of ceremonies — Carlos Sobera and Flora Gonzalez — well-loved stars of Spanish television. The ceremony closed with a performance by the Italian artist Andrea Casta, a violinist who has performed all over the world with his electric violin and unique luminous bow. The party then moved to the Piazza del Campo terraces at the aft of the ship, where guests enjoyed the “Molecule Show,” a stunning spectacle featuring a cluster of 300 helium-filled spheres that lifted an acrobat over a trapeze, enabling her to fly through the sky across Barcelona’s skyline to create an ethereal, magical effect. The christening party also was attended by other Spanish celebrities, including actor and singer “El Sevilla.” During the ship’s passage from Barcelona to Valencia, Spain, Meduza, the world’s most famous Italian trio of house music producers, hosted an exclusive DJ set. The aperitif and gala dinner was designed by Spanish Chef Ángel León, known as the “chef of the sea,” whose restaurant Aponiente has received three Michelin stars. Leòn is a partner of Costa Cruises, together with other two world famous chefs, Bruno Barbieri and Hélène Darroze. “It is a great thrill to celebrate the christening of our Costa Toscana in Barcelona, a city to which we are particularly attached and where we have been at home since the beginning of our history,” said Mario Zanetti, president of Costa Cruises. “For this occasion, we have organized an event to celebrate the start of a summer that marks the serene resumption of travel and vacations. The event also features the excellence of Costa’s offerings in all aspects, from high gastronomy to high-quality entertainment to unique experiences ashore. According to recent market research, nearly 14 million Europeans are dreaming of taking a cruise in the next 12 months, and cruises are among the trips with the highest potential to meet the needs of destinations exploration. We must take advantage of this upswing to promote a more sustainable tourism that respects the environment and values local communities. Our commitment is expressed not only through technologically advanced ships such as the LNG-powered Costa Toscana, but also by supporting innovative projects whose scope goes beyond the tourism sector, such as Chef Ángel León’s project.” Costa and the ‘Chef of the Sea’ Together for the ‘Food of the Future’ Costa Cruises and Ángel León are further strengthening their collaboration, addressing a theme that both have long been committed to, which is environmental sustainability. Through its charitable foundation, Costa Cruises is supporting a worldwide pioneering project — the development of “marine grain.” Restaurant Aponiente’s research center has started the cultivation of the Zostera marina species of sea grass in Spain’s Bay of Cadiz. Zostera marina helps generate greater marine biodiversity, enriching the ecosystem. It also contributes to mitigating climate change by absorbing and storing large amounts of carbon and produces seeds considered a nutritional “superfood” that could represent a future solution to the problems of hunger and malnutrition. With the support of Costa Cruises’ Foundation, the cultivated area of the ocean garden, which is currently about 3,000 square meters, can be expanded to promote the project and export Zostera marina to new coastal areas. Summer 2022: The Desire for Cruising Grows Costa Toscana represents the restart of Costa Cruises’ fleet, which will operate 10 ships this summer. Summer 2022 appears to be heading toward a significant upswing in travel. According to research commissioned by Costa Cruises from Human Highway in Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria, nearly 14 million Europeans dream of taking a cruise in the next 12 months. The sea seems to be the favorite place in all countries, while ingredients of the ideal vacation include rest, entertainment, gastronomy and discovering new destinations. Costa Toscana — A Traveling ‘Smart City’ Costa Toscana is a true traveling “smart city.” Through the use of liquefied natural gas, the emission of sulfur oxides and particulates into the atmosphere is almost completely eliminated (95-100% reduction), while also significantly lowering emissions of nitrogen oxide (direct reduction of 85%) and carbon dioxide (up to 20%). The Costa Group, which includes the Italian brand Costa Cruises and the German brand AIDA Cruises, was the first in the cruise industry to use LNG and currently counts four ships powered by this technology: AIDAnova, Costa Smeralda, Costa Toscana and AIDACosma. In addition, Costa Toscana features several cutting-edge technological innovations designed to further reduce its environmental impact. All daily freshwater needs are met by transforming seawater through the use of desalinators. Energy consumption is minimized through an intelligent energy efficiency system. In addition, 100% of separated collection and recycling of materials such as plastic, paper, glass and aluminum are carried out on board. Costa Toscana: Italian Design, a Unique Onboard Offer and the Best of the Mediterranean Costa Toscana’s interiors are the result of an extraordinary creative project curated by designer Adam D. Tihany to enhance and bring to life the colors and atmosphere of the Italian region of Tuscany. Furniture, lighting, fabrics and accessories are all “Made in Italy,” created by 15 partners who represent Italian excellence. The onboard atmosphere is perfectly integrated in this extraordinary context: from the Solemio Spa to the areas dedicated to entertainment; from the thematic bars, in collaboration with great Italian and international brands, to the 21 restaurants and areas dedicated to the “food experience,” including the new Archipelago Restaurant, which offers menus conceived to explore cruise destinations created for Costa by three chefs — Bruno Barbieri, Hélène Darroze and Ángel León. For the enjoyment of the little ones there is the Splash AcquaPark with its slide positioned on the highest deck, a new area dedicated to video games and the Squok Club. The Summit represents the first time the sector has been brought together to look ahead held since the start of the pandemic. Highlighting the unprecedented relevance of tourism, the Summit counts on the participation of leaders from business, politics and the international arena, with King Felipe VI of Spain serving as Honorary President. Joining UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili were Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Mauricio Claver-Carone, President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), Juan Carlos Salazar, Secretary-General of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Reyes Maroto, Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism of Spain, Juan Verde, President of the Advanced Leadership Foundation, and José Luis Bonet, President of the Chambers of Commerce of Spain. Pololikashvili said: “This Summit makes clear the importance of collaboration, as well as the vital role funding tourism and harnessing the power of innovation will play in building a more resilient and sustainable tourism.” Joining Pololikashvili for a high-level debate on ‘Funding the Future of Tourism’, Grynspan stressed that “tourism needs political support and investment.”. Ms Grynspan credited UNWTO for its work in promoting accreditation and certifications since the start of the crisis and added: “Tourism can be a very good energy and force to build back better, differently and together.” In a programme which reflected the key priorities of UNWTO and global tourism in general, the focus of the first day was on funding the future of tourism, particularly accelerating the shift towards net-zero growth. With world leaders set to arrive in Glasgow for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) next week, the discussions in Barcelona made clear tourism’s determination to embrace innovation and secure the funding necessary to enable the sector lives up to its climate action responsibilities. The Summit will culminate in the ‘Barcelona Call to Action’, a statement of intent signed by governments, destinations and businesses outlining a shared vision for a greener, more inclusive and resilient tourism, citing the sector’s potential contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals and the shift to net-zero.
