Qantas Adjusts Asia Network: Suspends Sydney-Shanghai Flights Adds Brisbane-Manila

In a significant reshuffle of its Asia network, Qantas has announced a series of updates, including suspending its Sydney-Shanghai flights and launching a new route from Brisbane to Manila. Sydney-Shanghai Service Suspended Amid Low Demand Starting 28 July 2024, Qantas will suspend flights to Shanghai due to low demand. The airline resumed the Sydney-Shanghai service in October last year following a pause during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the anticipated recovery in demand has not materialized. Qantas has committed to closely monitoring the market and plans to resume the service once demand rebounds. For customers affected by the suspension, Qantas offers a full refund or rebooking options on alternative flights. The airline assures continued connectivity to Shanghai and other Chinese destinations via its Hong Kong flights, with connections on partner airlines. Redirecting Resources to Meet Rising Demand in Asia The aircraft previously servicing the Shanghai route will now be deployed to enhance Qantas’ presence in other Asian destinations experiencing increased demand or presenting new tourism opportunities. New Direct Flights from Brisbane to Manila From 28 October 2024, Qantas will operate a new international route from Brisbane to Manila four times a week using Airbus A330 aircraft. This marks the airline’s return to the route after more than a decade, adding over 100,000 seats annually between Australia and the Philippines. Increased Flights to Singapore and India Qantas is set to boost its services to Singapore by approximately 10%, adding over 2,500 seats weekly. The Sydney-Singapore flights will increase from 14 to 17 return trips per week starting 11 December 2024, while the Brisbane-Singapore service will increase from seven to nine return flights per week from 27 October 2024. These changes aim to improve connectivity with Qantas’ daily Singapore-London service and reduce travel time to Heathrow. Additionally, the Sydney-Bengaluru route will expand from five weekly flights to daily during the peak holiday season from mid-December 2024 to late March 2025, providing over 12,000 additional seats over four months. Qantas International CEO Comments Cam Wallace, CEO of Qantas International, emphasized the airline’s commitment to aligning its services with customer needs. “Post-COVID, the travel landscape has shifted, and we are adapting our network accordingly,” said Wallace. “While we scale back on routes with lower demand, such as Shanghai, we’re excited to offer new options like the Brisbane-Manila route and increased flights to Singapore and Bengaluru, enhancing our customers’ travel choices and convenience.” Tickets for the new and additional flights are available on the Qantas website and through travel agents. Bookings for the Brisbane-Manila flights are expected to open soon. *All new services and increases are subject to government and regulatory approval. This media story has been crafted to provide a comprehensive overview of Qantas’ network updates and the strategic decisions behind them. It highlights the airline’s responsiveness to market demands and its commitment to offering enhanced travel options to its customers.

Brisbane Convention Centre’s ‘new precinct’ set to open in August

They are thrilled to announce their collaboration with Kim and the Brisbane Convention Centre, as they prepare for the opening of an exciting new precinct in Brisbane. This precinct, where the staff of Brisbane will reside, is one of four that will transform the city. Despite challenges such as floods, COVID-19, and supply chain issues over the past six years, they are pleased to confirm that the precinct will be opening towards the end of August. This will be a significant milestone not only for the precinct but also for Brisbane. The precinct, which was once an underutilised part of the CBD, now spans 24,000 square metres, covering roughly 10% of the Brisbane CBD. It will link via the Level 1 bridge to South Bank outlands, an iconic precinct for many years. Today, they are announcing their collaboration with the Brisbane Convention Centre to make Brisbane an enviable destination for business events, incentives, and associations. The Neville Bonner Bridge will link their precinct to the convention centre, providing a short 100-metre walk for delegates and event attendees. They plan to activate the bridge for events, lighting it up in company colours or staging events directly on the bridge. The precinct, known as Queens Wharf, is a collaboration between the Star Entertainment Group, Chow Tai Fook Enterprises, and Far East Consortium. It will feature four hotels, 50 bars and restaurants, 7.5 hectares of public realm, and a curated art scene. They will also be reactivating the 12 heritage buildings within the precinct. One of the highlights of the precinct will be the sky deck, a 250-metre runway of activation space that will offer the best views for River fireworks on New Year’s Eve. They look forward to offering this venue to delegates visiting Brisbane. In addition, they have a ballroom that spans 2000 square metres and can accommodate up to 14140 people in a banquet format. This will complement the overall offering for Brisbane. They are not here to compete against the convention centre but to work closely together to curate events and make Brisbane the destination of choice. They believe that if Brisbane wins, the whole city wins. This means the convention centre wins, and the other precincts and Brisbane as a whole win. They are just playing their part in the incredible infrastructure support currently happening in Brisbane. They look forward to hosting all and showing all what it’s all about when you all are next in Brisbane.

Brisbane Airport Begins Big Terminal Transformation

As part of a $5 billion modernisation plan, Brisbane Airport has begun a significant overhaul of its domestic terminal. Included in the improvements are state-of-the-art computed tomography (CT) security screening devices, a mezzanine level for easier access to security screening, a brand-new baggage system and baggage hall, and enhanced self-check-in facilities. Other changes include bathroom refurbishments, expanded dining options, bussing lounges for passengers on aircraft in remote parking bays, and refreshed gate lounges, while outside the terminal itself, the airport is adding 1,700 new spaces to its P2 parking garage and installing charging stations for electric airside vehicles, storage for scooters and bikes in a covered area within a short walk from the terminal and next to the airport hotels. CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff of Brisbane Airport said the airport is investing now to improve connectivity and sustainability ahead of the expected population growth. “The Brisbane Airport Domestic Terminal is the most connected domestic terminal in Australia with services to 61 destinations, therefore, it is a very important transport hub. About fifty percent of those destinations are in Queensland,” he said. Since the population of Queensland is expected to increase by 10% over the next decade, the airport terminals must be prepared for an additional 10 million annual travellers. “More than 20,000 people come to work at Brisbane Airport every day, and we forecast that to grow to 30,000 by the time the flame is lit at the Opening Ceremony for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.” Airport transformations in the works include a new aeromedical centre, additional aircraft parking, resurfaced runways, and a revamped international terminal to better accommodate medical repatriation and emergency services. This week marked the beginning of what is projected to be a three-year period of construction for the domestic terminal.
