Zhengzhou gets first Australian connection

Jetstar reveals its latest route into China Zhengzhou, the capital of central China's Henan province, will get its first direct connection to Australia later this year. Jetstar has announced plans to start flying direct to the city from Melbourne in December 2017, with twice weekly flights. The service, which will be operated by a twin-aisle Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, is expected to bring 35,000 Chinese travellers to Australia each year. "We expect our low-fares will further stimulate inbound tourism from China to Australia," said Jetstar's group CEO, Jayne Hrdlicka. "China already accounts for the largest source of tourism in Victoria, and by 2020 it’s predicted that China will overtake New Zealand to be Australia’s largest tourism market. "We know that Chinese travellers generally visit two or three cities when they visit Australia so we expect this will boost tourism to other parts of Australia." John Eren, Victoria's Minister for Tourism & Major Events, commented; "More direct flights to China means more visitors and greater business and trade opportunities for Victorians. To land Jetstar’s new direct service to Zhengzhou is another major coup." Zhengzhou provides a major potential source of visitors to Australia. The city itself is home to more than 10 million people and Henan province is one of the most populous regions in China, with around 100 million people - approximately the same as Thailand and Malaysia combined. Zhengzhou Jetstar's Dreamliner can accommodate 335 passengers in two classes, meaning that the airline will offer 670 seats in each direction every week. Jetstar is partnering with China Comfort Travel on the Melbourne-Zhengzhou service, with the travel agency being tasked with selling flights and packages directly to Chinese travellers. "The opening of the new route from Zhengzhou to Melbourne, which is the first non-stop intercontinental passenger route to Australia in Henan province, builds a direct bridge between the two cities. It will significantly promote the friendship and cultural exchanges between China and Australia," said Jun Yan, general manager of Australia Comfort, a subsidiary of China Comfort Travel. This isn't Jetstar's first foray into central China, however; the Australian low-cost carrier previously operated a similar “scheduled charter” service between the Gold Coast and Wuhan.

Chapman Freeborn accelerates expansion into China

Global air charter specialist Chapman Freeborn formally opened its new office in Zhengzhou last 13th October, accelerating its expansion within the Chinese Mainland. The Zhengzhou facility is the company's sixth in China and operates alongside its counterparts in Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Shenzhen. The new office was opened following the recruitment of its team in September, and builds upon Chapman Freeborn’s efforts to gain a secure foothold in China, which date back all the way to 2004. According to Chapman Freeborn president in Greater China Allen Liu: “The new team in Zhengzhou will help us further develop our market resources across the country, enhance regional service capabilities, and boost response times. As a result, we’ll be able to deliver even more professional, timely, and efficient air cargo solutions to our clients there. Why Zhengzhou? Zhengzhou was chosen due to its strategic location at the very heart of China, and its proximity to Xinzheng International Airport, which has a strong track record in handling outsized, irregular, and heavy-lift cargo, as well as standard e-commerce parcels and express shipments. An additional factor behind the decision was the office building’s close proximity to Zhengzhou East Railway Station and key cargo operators like SF Express and Cargolux. The local team will be guided by Huizi Zhao (Bella Zhao) who recently joined Chapman Freeborn as the company’s manager for Central Greater China. Her responsibilities involve leading Chapman Freeborn’s charter and freight forwarding operations, driving commercial development, and ensuring high-quality delivery across the region. Zhao said of her appointment: “I am honoured to join Chapman Freeborn to leverage the Group’s domestic and international resources to lead the Zhengzhou team with determination. By partnering closely with our five regional teams, we’ll be able to expand our commercial footprint, as well as ensure professional and efficient project delivery, bringing solutions and services to clients with genuine care." Under her leadership, the team will be focusing on expanding the Group’s partner network across Central China and providing a broader set of services to its clients in Greater China.

Cathay Cargo successfully ships terracotta warriors and related artefacts to Australia

Cathay Cargo takes pride in having transported ten terracotta army figures and over 200 artefacts from Xi’an to Perth via Hong Kong for the now ongoing Terracotta Warriors: Legacy of the First Emperor exhibition. This breathtaking historical display was organised by the Shaanxi Provincial Cultural Heritage Administration with support from the Shaanxi Cultural Heritage Promotion Centre, the Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum, and the Western Australian (WA) Museum Boola Bardip. WA Museum Boola Bardip’s director for museums and exhibitions Jason Fair declared: “What makes this exhibition unique and the first of its kind is its impressive collection of priceless artefacts. Most of the objects have never been seen in Australia before, with nearly half leaving China for the first time. It is our mission to inspire curiosity. We hope people gain an understanding of the culture, history and people of China as well as this pivotal moment in Chinese history.” A painstakingly careful shipment  The transportation of these priceless cultural treasures demonstrates Cathay Cargo’s expertise in handling special cargo, and its commitment to excellence and precision in moving invaluable cultural treasures. Leveraging its Cathay Expert and Cathay Secure specialist solutions, Cathay Cargo worked closely with the shipment custodians and cargo agent partners to develop a customised transportation plan tailored to the unique nature of the cargo and the specific packaging requirements provided by the customer.  The plan meticulously addressed every detail to ensure the safe and secure storage, transport and delivery of these irreplaceable pieces of history, all under the watchful eyes of CCTV surveillance and Cathay Cargo’s highly trained professionals.  According to Cathay director of cargo Tom Owen: “The terracotta warriors are among China’s most iconic cultural treasures. It is a great privilege to help bring Chinese culture to the world by transporting these important relics from their home in Xi’an to Perth for the exhibition, ensuring their safe transport at every step of their journey.” Owen added that transporting these unique pieces of history involved meticulous preparation and close collaboration between Cathay’s teams, partners and authorities in Hong Kong, the Chinese Mainland and Australia to ensure every detail was carefully considered.  He thus enthused: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to showcase Cathay Cargo’s expertise in handling special cargo and demonstrate that ‘We Know How’.”  Putting a plan in action While the statues and artefacts originate in Xi’an, they were first transported to Zhengzhou where they were then flown to Australia via Cathay’s Hong Kong hub and transported to their final destination in Perth.  The Cathay Cargo team oversaw the inventory check and packaging process from the initial stage in Xi’an.  The shipment was then tracked via GPS from departure in Xi’an until arrival at Zhengzhou Airport, whereupon the cargo was directed to a dedicated delivery zone and security channel. Cathay Cargo developed a tailored build-up plan based on the customer’s loading diagrams to ensure the utmost care was rendered.  Safety nets and straps were used to secure the artefacts, preventing any movement during transit; meanwhile, experienced pallet build-up specialists also provided guidance on-site, while Cathay Cargo personnel maintained full oversight end-to-end. The shipments were loaded in precise alignment with the customer’s specifications to minimise impact from take-off and landing, and were continuously monitored under real-time surveillance throughout the ground-handling process.
