Sharjah’s Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), together with the emirate’s Environment and Protected Areas Authority announced the launch of an eco-tourism project for Kalba on the East Coast.
CEO, His Excellency Marwan Bin Jassim Al Sarkal said the project would feature the largest eco-tourism facilities in the UAE, focusing on a strategic location that includes mountains, salt plains and coastal shores and the largest mangrove forest on the East Coast.
The Kalba Eco-Tourism Project will be implemented in three phases with two nature reserves in Kalba, a visitor centre and restoration of archaeological sites to be followed by development of Kalba Creek. There will also be a commercial complex with restaurant and retail components – plus rehabilitation of islands in the creek to boost marine and bird life.
The final phase, to be completed within six years, will focus on hotel and chalet accommodation, with more than 300 rooms conforming to eco-friendly design standards, while other elements of the project include a dedicated art building, and dive and marine centre.
