High alerts were now in place at six volcanoes in Indonesia. The country’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said that increased activity had been detected at Mount Tambora in West Nusa Tenggara, Anak Ranakan in East Nusa Tenggara, Papandayan in West Java, Karangetang and Lokon in North Sulawesi, and Anak Krakatau (pictured) in the Sunda Strait, between Java and Sumatra.
A spokesperson for the BNBP told the Jakarta Post that the six volcanoes are all at alert level three, meaning they “could develop into an eruption or disaster”.
Reported yesterday in Travel Daily Asia, Anak Krakatau is producing more than 5,000 tremors per day, and a 2km exclusion zone has been set up around the peak. The volcano was born out of the infamous Krakatoa volcano that exploded in 1883 killing an estimated 40,000 people.
