SpiceJet has announced a partnership with US aerospace manufacturer Natilus to bring the innovative HORIZON aircraft to India. This collaboration aims to certify the aircraft for the Indian market, with SpiceJet planning to purchase 100 units once certification is complete. The HORIZON aircraft, known for its blended-wing body design, promises to reduce carbon emissions by 50% and operational costs by 30%, whilst accommodating 240 passengers.
Natilus has established a subsidiary, Natilus India, headquartered in Mumbai, to support its operations in the country. The Indian domestic air travel market, which has seen a 102% year-over-year increase, presents significant growth opportunities. Natilus India will focus on expanding the BWB aircraft family in India and exploring local manufacturing partnerships.
Ajay Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of SpiceJet, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "In line with our commitment to encouraging innovation and sustainability in aviation, SpiceJet is proud to support Natilus in developing this next-generation aircraft." Natilus CEO Aleksey Matyushev highlighted SpiceJet as an ideal customer for the HORIZON, given its focus on technological innovation.
The HORIZON aircraft is expected to enter the market in the early 2030s, following the debut of Natilus's cargo aircraft, KONA. With over 570 aircraft preorders valued at $8.7 billion, Natilus is poised to revolutionise aviation economics by reducing fuel consumption and increasing payload capacity.
