Sun Siyam has unveiled one of the Maldives' largest solar energy initiatives, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to renewable energy. Announced at Sun Siyam Olhuveli on 6 December 2025, the project is part of the group's long-term sustainability roadmap. The initiative, which includes installations at Siyam World and Sun Siyam Olhuveli, is set to transform energy consumption across the resorts, aligning with the Maldives' goal of 33% renewable energy penetration by 2028.
The solar initiative is structured around three key pillars: enhanced sustainability, greater energy independence, and technological innovation. With a combined installed solar capacity of 4,110 kWp, the project is expected to generate over 6 million kWh of clean energy annually, saving $1,292,289.12 (US$1,292,289.12) in diesel costs and reducing CO₂ emissions by more than 4,458 tonnes. This will offset 17% of energy use at Siyam World and 12% at Sun Siyam Olhuveli.
The resorts will utilise hybrid solar systems with battery storage, designed by Hayleys Fentons Ltd of Sri Lanka. These systems include real-time monitoring dashboards and workforce training programmes to optimise energy use and empower engineering teams. The initiative aims for 50% renewable energy usage by 2030, providing a scalable model for future properties.
Sun Siyam's CEO, Deepak Booneady, emphasised the group's commitment to sustainability, stating, "At Sun Siyam, sustainability is not an initiative. It is a responsibility we proudly embrace." The solar programme supports the Sun Siyam Care framework, focusing on environmental stewardship, clean energy generation, and local empowerment.
