Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) has partnered with Tata Power to inaugurate a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Goa. This marks a significant milestone as the first such installation in India's hospitality sector, aiming to enhance sustainable energy management.
The BESS, with a storage capacity of 2 MW, is a crucial step in IHCL's decarbonisation efforts under its Paathya initiative and Tata Group's Aalingana vision. Tata Power executed the installation following comprehensive feasibility studies, investing approximately $420,000 (₹3.50 crore). The system is projected to save $180,000 (₹1.50 crore) annually by reducing reliance on diesel power.
Sheetal Singh, Area Director – South Goa & General Manager, Taj Exotica Resort & Spa Goa, stated, “Sustainability is at the core of our ethos at Taj Exotica, Goa. The BESS project is an exemplary step in modernising the way hospitality manages energy.”
The initiative is expected to cut diesel consumption by 200,000 litres annually, significantly lowering carbon emissions and operational costs. It also improves power quality and reduces generator runtime. The system integrates grid, diesel, and solar power sources with advanced interlocking and protection mechanisms, ensuring seamless operation without affecting guest comfort.
Ranjit Phillipose, Senior Vice President – Operations, IHCL Goa, remarked, “The BESS project at Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Goa is not just an engineering achievement—it is a defining moment in our sustainability journey.”
This pioneering project sets a new standard for responsible luxury in the hospitality industry, reflecting IHCL's commitment to a sustainable future.
