Tokyo Skytree opens
The Tokyo Skytree opened to the public today (22 May).
At 634 metres, it is the world’s second tallest structure behind Dubai’s Burj Khalifa Tower, and includes two observation decks – one at 350 metres above ground level, and another at 450 metres. It will also include a large retail and restaurant zone, office space, an aquarium and a planetarium.
The tower, which took three and a half years to build, was originally intended to be only 610 metres tall, but the design was extended after it was discovered that the new Canton Tower in Guangzhou was going to be the same height.
As well as being a major tourist attraction, the Tokyo Skytree will provide TV broadcasting services for the Tokyo region.
