A recent survey by Civitatis, a global marketplace for guided tours, has revealed that 60% of travellers still prefer human-curated recommendations over artificial intelligence (AI) when planning their trips. The survey, which included over 7,000 users, highlights concerns about the reliability of AI-generated travel advice, with nearly half of respondents encountering incorrect or outdated information, particularly regarding opening hours, pricing, and real-time availability.
The study indicates that whilst AI is often used as a starting point for inspiration, travellers tend to verify information through trusted platforms before making final decisions. Common errors reported include outdated schedules, broken links, and incorrect pricing. Andrés Spitzer, CEO of Civitatis, stated, “Whilst AI is a powerful ally for inspiration, real travel planning requires certainties that only the expert judgement of our teams and the real experiences of our customers can provide.”
Despite the rise of AI, more than 60% of respondents do not rely on AI tools for travel planning, preferring to design itineraries independently. The survey also found that over 65% of respondents are over 46 and typically take between two and five trips per year, underscoring the value placed on direct planning and verified information.
In response, Civitatis has launched a campaign titled “Travel is Human” to emphasise the importance of human curation. The company also introduced an updated mobile app offering real-time travel information and access to millions of verified traveller reviews, aiming to enhance the reliability of travel experiences
