VANBRUGH300 celebrates Sir John Vanbrugh’s legacy

In 2026, six of Britain's most iconic estates will join forces for VANBRUGH300, a yearlong celebration of Sir John Vanbrugh, the renowned architect, playwright, and soldier. This nationwide festival offers a unique opportunity for travel trade, group organisers, and heritage enthusiasts to explore Vanbrugh's architectural masterpieces through exhibitions, special events, and family-friendly experiences.

The festival will feature a new heritage trail across England, including Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, Castle Howard in Yorkshire, Seaton Delaval Hall in Northumberland, Grimsthorpe Castle in Lincolnshire, Kimbolton Castle in Cambridgeshire, and Stowe House in Buckinghamshire. Visitors will delve into the dramatic stories behind these historic estates, with exhibitions like "The Rockstar of the English Baroque" curated by Vanbrugh expert Rory Fraser. This display will showcase rare drawings, portraits, and quotes from Vanbrugh's comedies, highlighting his transformation from a merchant's son to a celebrated architect.

Blenheim Palace will host "Blueprints of Power," an exhibition exploring Vanbrugh's genius and ambition. Additionally, the festival will include Vanbrugh-themed weekends with live storytelling, creative workshops, and theatre performances.

The Georgian Group, the charity behind VANBRUGH300, aims to boost regional tourism and support local economies by spotlighting Vanbrugh's work. Director Anya Lucas emphasised the project's potential to enhance cultural tourism and community engagement.

Key events include a major exhibition at Sir John Soane's Museum in London from 4 March to 28 June 2026, and a London showcase at the Georgian Group HQ in August. Full details and updates are available at Vanbrugh300.co.uk.
