Virgin Atlantic has announced it will stop flights between London and Nairobi this September following increased costs and the ‘challenging economic environment’ in Europe and Kenya.
The airline will halt its services on the route on 23 September amid higher fuel prices, low load factors and increased taxes in the UK.
“We have taken the difficult decision to withdraw our services between London and Nairobi. These are still challenging times for the airline industry and we have to deploy our aircraft to routes with the right level of demand to be financially viable,” said Julie Southern, chief commercial officer at Virgin Atlantic.
The news comes after Virgin Atlantic announced it will reintroduce its Mumbai flights later this year and add its fourth daily flight to New York.
“Governments must be more realistic about the aviation taxes they impose and we urgently need to increase capacity at Heathrow,” added Sir Richard Branson.
